Look at the work

Thatched roofs that occupy the entire landscape

The first house enters the frame from the left. Two small blue and brown figures stand in front of his door. Behind them, the roofs go down diagonally and follow one another to a tall stone house at the end of the path.

The white and gray walls are almost never smooth: touches of yellow, blue and green circulate there as in thatch. The turquoise and white sky is painted in large commas, while the ocher road brings together the buildings from the first to the last shot.

The street disappears under the rhythm of the roofs, whose irregular lines give the village an almost geological strength.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work 1398 can be recognized by its large diagonal roofs, the dark door on the left, the two figures and the light house which closes the perspective.

01

Thatch as the main material

Yellow, green, brown and black are laid in tight lines. The roofs appear heavy and thick, very different from the lighter walls.

02

A perspective without rigidity

The road and facades lead towards the bottom, but no line is perfectly straight. The deformations make the view more mobile and denser.

03

Two inhabitants as a ladder

The small figures in front of the door measure the height of the roofs. Their blue and brown presence also introduces a human accent into the village.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must differentiate thatch, stone and road by the direction of the keys, while retaining the depth created by the sequence of facades.

  • The green and yellow streaks of the large thatched roofs
  • The two small figures in front of the left door
  • The ocher road which leads to the house at the back
  • The wide white and blue touches of the sky
