Look at the work

Skaters and inclined poplars set in motion a landscape caught by the cold

The edge line crosses the canvas a little above the middle. The trunks rise in tight diagonals, leaning from left to right, then dissolve into a crown of orange, pink, mauve and blue touches. The clear sky remains visible between the branches and prevents the wooded mass from closing.

On the ice, the characters are indicated by some blue-purple and red-brown accents. A lone skater slides to the left while a denser group gathers on the right. The long cream, blue and pink touches in the foreground follow their movements and give direction to the frozen surface.

The rigidity of winter is contradicted by two parallel movements: the tilt of poplars in the air and the running of skaters on the ice.

The Museum Barberini dates the work to 1899. This oil on canvas measuring 60 × 80 cm bears a slightly distinct Claude Monet stamp at the bottom right and appears under number 1619 of the catalog raisonné.

Course02

From Michel Monet to the Hasso Plattner collection

The published provenance mentions Michel Monet, Otto Wertheimer in Paris, M. Knoedler in New York, an American collection, then Harry and Yvonne Lenart. Sold at Sotheby's New York on November 3, 2010, the painting joined the art market in July 2014 before the current collection.

The work was notably presented at the Museum Barberini in 2017 and 2020, at the Denver Art Museum in 2019 -2020, then in the exhibition dedicated to artists and sport at the Marmottan Monet Museum in 2024.
