À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte avec cruche, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 · Nuenen
Still life with clogs and pottery, F54Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A black bottle, three terracotta containers and a pair of clogs are lined up on a bare table. Van Gogh transforms these everyday objects into an exercise in weight, texture and light in a range of browns and ochres.
Look at the work
The hooves lead the eye towards a compact group of containers
The two wooden shoes occupy the foreground, slightly offset from each other. Behind them, a large ocher terrine opens its handle to the right and connects the group to the edge of the canvas.
On the left, the high jug, the black bottle and the decorated pot form three tight verticals. Their collars, handles and contours stand out against an almost uniform brown background, while the table remains covered with long oblique touches.
Still life with clogs and pottery F54/JH536 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel measuring 42 × 54 cm, painted in Nuenen in November 1884. The Centraal Museum preserves it under inventory 21828.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The composition is based on the opposition between the verticals of the containers and the lower shapes of the hooves. The reduced palette allows each material to remain distinct.
The hooves open a path in the foreground
Their tips, black hollows and worn edges form a diagonal that leads to the terrine and the bottle.
Pottery does not receive the same light
The yellow jug is almost shiny, the decorated pot remains gray-white and the terrine becomes a large ocher volume. The differences in value are enough to separate them.
The black bottle fixes the left center
Its vertical outline and clear reflection interrupt the earthy tones. It serves as a pivot between tall objects and hooves.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F54/JH536, the format of 42 × 54 cm and inventory 21828 precisely identify this still life of the Centraal Museum.
The brown shapes in the foreground are hooves
The generic commercial title of jug did not reflect the full subject. The pair of wooden shoes directly participates in the composition.
Simple objects to study dark tones
In 1884, Van Gogh painted several sets of bottles, pots and utensils in order to work the volumes in a deliberately limited range.
A work preserved in Utrecht
The painting belongs to the Centraal Museum and is numbered 21828; the catalogs raisonnés record it under F54 and JH536.
