Look at the work

The dishes are ordered by height, color and material in a retained light

The round terrine occupies the center and contains a spoon placed diagonally. On the left, a small white cup advances towards the edge; on the right, the light blue bowl and the decorated pot form a second group.

The three vertical bottles close the background. Their green reflections are very limited, but they are enough to separate the glass from the dark background and extend the lines of the pot and spoon.

Earthenware and bottles F53/JH538 is a 39.5 × 56 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September - October 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under inventory s0138V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh contrasts several materials without changing tonal register: dark glass, red terracotta, beige stoneware, blue ceramic and table wood are all modeled in a brown and green range.

01

The containers create a series of nested volumes

Small cup, terrine, bowl and pot gradually rise to the right. The bottles repeat this rise at the back and give a stable structure to the whole.

02

The spoon passes through round shapes

Its diagonal starts from the terrine and goes up towards the bottles. It introduces a clear direction in the middle of bowls, pots and collars, mainly circular or vertical.

03

Light blue acts as a measured accent

The right bowl is the coldest and brightest area. It balances the beige of the decorated pot and the red-browns of the large terrine.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F53/JH538, the format of 39.5 × 56 cm and the inventory s0138V1962 identify this still life of the Van Gogh Museum.

Dating

The work is now placed in September - October 1885

The museum's technical research has led to a re-examination of the dating of several still lifes of tableware formerly located earlier in the Nuenen period.

Exercise

Objects allow you to study values

Without a live model or rapid light change, Van Gogh can compare the brilliance of glass, the dullness of sandstone and the reflections of ceramic.

Collection

The number s0138V1962 sets the identification

He distinguished F53 from the many close sets combining bottles, pots, clogs and mugs in the years 1884 -1885.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the three dark bottles, the large terrine, the diagonal of the spoon, the decorated pot, the blue bowl, the small cup and the very restrained reflections.

  • The three bottle necks lined up backwards
  • The large brown terrine in the center
  • The spoon that rises diagonally
  • The blue-green patterns of the sandstone pot
  • The light blue bowl placed at the right edge
