Still life with quinces, F602Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A compact cluster of golden yellow quinces rests on turquoise blue fabric; the proximity of the motif, the almost total absence of cast shadows and the scattered red touches transform this modest subject into a study of contrasts.

Look at the work

Quinces shaped by color

The fruits occupy the center of the canvas in an irregular mass. The slightly plunging viewpoint makes bumps, hollows and tails visible without resorting to complex staging.

The blue-green fabric rises behind the quinces and reduces depth. Its short oblique streaks respond to the yellow touches of the fruits, while a few red accents reinforce the surrounding green.

Van Gogh uses still life as a chromatic laboratory: the yellows and oranges of quinces gain intensity upon contact with complementary blues and greens.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden keep this oil on canvas measuring 46 × 59.5 cm under the number Gal.-Nr. 2593; the catalog reference is F602.

01

Yellow versus blue green

The main contrast is between warm fruit and cold fabric. The two color families reinforce each other without the need for additional decoration.

02

A deliberately shallow depth

The close-up viewpoint, the raised canvas behind the fruits and the absence of sharp shadows bring the composition closer to the painted surface.

03

Very calculated red streaks

Short red lines emerge in the turquoise blue. Complementary to green, they further intensify the vibration of the background.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Dresden notice analyzes the canvas as a study of complements and notes the influence of Japanese prints in the contours and the absence of cast shadows.

Subject

Quinces, not corners

The piriform fruits are yellow quinces with bumpy surfaces, gathered in a pile seen up close and slightly from above.

Japonism

Simplified outline and shadow

The fine ocher ring and the renunciation of cast shadows take up solutions that Van Gogh observed in Japanese prints.

Provenance

Entered Dresden in 1920

The work was acquired from Berlin dealer Karl Haberstock in exchange for a pastel by Rosalba Carriera.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must differentiate each quince without isolating them, preserve the yellow-blue-green contrasts and maintain the very brief red lines which punctuate the fabric.

  • Golden yellow quince pile
  • Bumps modeled in white and ocher
  • The turquoise blue fabric raised
  • The little red streaks
  • The purple-brown corner at the top right
