À propos de l’œuvre

Bobinoir, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

The Winding Mill, F175Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A wooden winding machine is placed diagonally in an almost black interior. Its large circular wheel, spokes and mechanism receive a cold light that detaches the tool from the green wall and earthy floor.

Look at the work

The Ferris wheel transforms a spinning tool into a mechanical still life

The winding bench starts from the center left and goes down towards the lower right corner. The wheel occupies the upper right quadrant; its dark circle and light spokes give precise geometry to the whole.

A small container sits in the foreground, while the axle, handles and uprights fit into the center. The light coming from the left catches the edges of the wood without completely revealing the bottom.

The Winding Maker F175/JH497 is an oil on canvas measuring 34 × 44.3 cm painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0054V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Long compared to the weavers' studies of 1884 because of its subject, the painting is today dated March - April 1885. Its rear light and its arrangement constructed like a still life support this dating.

01

The circle dominates a network of diagonals

The wheel provides the only closed shape. Around it, feet, bench, axles and handles cross and give the mechanism visual energy.

02

The contours are never uniformly black

Shadows contain bottle green, brown and blue. Thin gray-green highlights allow you to follow pieces of wood in the dark.

03

The floor and wall remain deliberately indistinct

Van Gogh does not explain the workshop. He isolates the object and focuses attention on its silhouette, its joints and its worn material.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F175/JH497, the format of 34 × 44.3 cm and s0054V1962 distinguish this study of the winder from the numerous paintings where Van Gogh directly represents the weavers at work.

Function

The winder prepares the thread for the loom

The wheel is used to regularly wind the wire on a spool. The tool belongs to the artisanal world that Van Gogh carefully observes in Nuenen.

Dating

Light connects the work to the spring of 1885

The museum's research compares its backlight effects and sharp execution to Van Gogh's concerns in March and April.

Gender

The tool is treated as a still life

No craftsman appears. The mechanism is installed, framed and illuminated for itself, with equal attention to volume and use.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the wheel circle, spokes, diagonal bench, handles, small container, gray-green highlights and brown shadows of the ground.

  • The Ferris wheel sinks in the upper right
  • The rays illuminated inside the circle
  • The bench which crosses the canvas diagonally
  • The small container in the left foreground
  • The thin green edges that reveal the mechanism
