À propos de l’œuvre

Paysage avec église et maisons, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Landscape with church and houses, F185aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A road carved with deep ruts crosses a landscape of Nuenen towards a low church and a few houses. The thin trees, pinkish beige sky and green-brown earth give this small canvas an end-of-winter light.

Look at the work

A road leads to the village

Two clear paths start from the foreground and converge towards the buildings. A dark figure stands almost in the center, a tiny human measure facing the expanse of the land.

The church appears on the left behind a row of bare trees. The lower houses stretch to the right; above, a widely brushed sky occupies almost half of the composition.

Landscape with Church and Houses F185a/JH761 is a 22 × 37 cm oil on canvas dated April 1885 in Nuenen. The work, today in private collection, has had a discussed history of attribution.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Depth arises less from architectural perspective than from the movement of ruts, the shrinking of trees and the contrast between dark ground and clear sky.

01

The ruts open the landscape

Their irregular diagonals start from the lower edges and tighten towards the figure. They give an immediate direction to the gaze.

02

The trees make vertical lace

Trunks and branches barely stand out from the pink ocher sky. Their finesse contrasts with the large horizontal touches of the road and the fields.

03

The village remains secondary

The church and houses do not form a detailed topographical view. They serve as the arrival point for a landscape dominated by the path and the atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The painting is registered under F185a/JH761, dated April 1885 and measures 22 × 37 cm. Recent sources report that its attribution has been discussed; this precision is part of its documentary history.

Catalog

F185a and JH761

These historical issues connect the painting to the catalogs of De la Faille and Hulsker. They allow us to distinguish it from Van Gogh's numerous views of churches.

Attribution

A complex documentary story

The painting has long been published under the name Van Gogh, while contemporary bases also mention a discussed attribution. The sheet keeps these two benchmarks transparently.

Pattern

Nuenen in the spring of 1885

The muddy road, still bare trees and rural buildings correspond to the subjects that Van Gogh observed around the village in early 1885.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must keep the two ruts converging, the central figure, the dark silhouette of the church, the fine trees, the green-brown fields and the pink sky covered with light touches.

  • The clear paths that start from the foreground
  • The small dark figure in the center
  • The church placed on the left
  • The line of bare trees
  • The pinkish beige sky largely brushed
