Father Pilon's HouseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A dead end lined with walls leads to houses almost absorbed by a chestnut tree in bloom. The clear road bends between the gardens while a deep blue sky envelops the large plant mass.

Look at the work

A dead end, walls and a chestnut tree in bloom

The path starts from the bottom left and narrows towards the center. Yellow, white and green walls mark the edges; their oblique lines establish depth. Several small facades fit together behind the fences.

The chestnut tree occupies the center right and almost entirely hides the large house. Its light flowers are embedded in green and blue touches. Around its crown, the sky becomes darker and forms like a halo.

The gaze passes through a fragmented architecture before coming up against the monumental tree which controls the entire composition.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F791 work is distinguished by its 49 × 70 cm format, its angled path, its enclosed gardens and the flowered chestnut tree which hides the main house.

01

The road as a visual entrance

Two clear, winding lines lead from the foreground to the buildings. Their irregularity animates the journey without breaking the depth.

02

A tree painted like a vault

The chestnut crown brings together hundreds of short touches. Its round shape covers the roofs and becomes the real center of the image.

03

The sky in dark halo

Blue intensifies around foliage. This contrast brings out the pale flowers and isolates the tree above the light walls.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

La Maison du Père Pilon is an oil on canvas of 49 × 70 cm painted in Auvers-sur-Oise in May 1890. Preserved in the Stavros Niarchos collection, it bears the references F791 and JH1995.

Pattern

A dead end in the village

The texts of the Van Gogh exhibition in Auvers describe a dead end road lined with walled gardens and houses, observed during the artist's first outings.

Study

A preparatory drawing

Van Gogh first made an annotated drawing of colors, then developed the painted composition based on these indications.

Collection

Stavros Niarchos

This private provenance and the references F791/JH1995 distinguish the painting from La Maison du Père Éloi, F794.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the path in depth, the network of walls and above all the contrast between the light chestnut tree and the dark blue sky.

  • The gray-blue path that curves between the walls
  • The central chestnut tree covered with light flowers
  • The interlocking yellow and white facades
  • Deep blue sky tightened around tree
