Houses in Argenteuil W277hand painted reproduction

Three white houses with red roofs line up behind a vast yellow and green meadow punctuated with poppies. A church spire stands in the center under a blue sky covered with purple and white clouds. In 1873, Monet looked at Argenteuil as a meeting place between countryside and modern suburbs: recent architecture remains light, almost absorbed by air, grass and light.

Look at the work

A flowery meadow gives new houses the lightness of a landscape

The foreground occupies almost half of the canvas. Monet superimposes yellows, greens and bluish grays, then disperses small red touches which suggest the poppies without drawing them. This open strip keeps the viewer away from the houses and amplifies the feeling of space.

The facades are divided into three groups separated by gardens, fences and trees. Their walls are never pure white: mauves, blues and greens shape the shadow. Above, the dark spire of the church and the chimneys create a few fine verticals in front of a sky treated by wide passages.

Monet chose neither the intact countryside nor the dense city: he painted the edge of Argenteuil, where houses, gardens and fields are transformed together.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A large strip of meadow to slow the approach

The apparent void in the foreground is carefully constructed by variations of yellow-green. Poppies form an irregular seedling which animates the surface and gradually leads towards homes.

02

The white facades reflect the sky

Each house receives mauve or blue shadows, salmon roofs and some black accents in the openings. This colorful palette keeps the architecture in the same atmosphere as the landscape.

03

Signs of modernization without spectacular effect

New houses, fences and gardens bear witness to the growth of Argenteuil, connected to Paris by the railway. Monet integrates them into the everyday motif rather than making them a descriptive urban scene.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual comes from the digitization of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin for Maisons à Argenteuil, inventory AI 637 and catalog Wildenstein 277. The only file is a real WebP of 1,654 × 1,202 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The sky remains bright despite the purple clouds

Light blues, purple grays and cream whites alternate in soft passages. The darkest clouds concentrate to the right and bring out the warm roofs.

Color02

Poppies do not form any regular lines

Red appears in small groups, more in the center and to the right. Their random dispersion creates a natural depth in the meadow.

Matter03

The houses each have a different temperature

The house on the left tends towards blue, the one in the center towards gray, the one on the right towards green and pink. Respecting these differences avoids a monotonous alignment of white facades.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 54 × 73 cm. It belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin under the inventory AI 637 and bears the number Wildenstein 277.

Location01

The residential outskirts of Argenteuil

Monet settled in this commune in 1871. There he observed the bridges, the Seine, the gardens and the new constructions which quickly transformed the old rural locality.

Provenance02

An acquisition of the Nationalgalerie in 1898

The painting passed through the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel before entering the Nationalgalerie in Berlin on December 19, 1898. It was one of the museum's early acquisitions of a French impressionist.

Picture03

Institutional digitalization faithful to the work

The reference file is provided by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and photographed by Joerg P. Anders. It restores the more gray and purple tones of the canvas, often replaced in reproductions by overly saturated greens and blues.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the great depth of the meadow.
  • Scatter the poppies in irregular groups.
  • Color the shadows of the white facades.
  • Keep church spire thin and vertical.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This light landscape is suitable for a living room, bedroom or dining room. A light oak, off-white or matte gold frame extends its opening; a gray blue, linen or sage green wall reveals roofs and poppies.
