À propos de l’œuvre
Vase avec des fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · 1886 -1887 · Paris
Vase with flowersReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A small enameled white vase emerges from an almost black background; around a large red heart, pink, white flowers and green foliage compose a dense bouquet, lit by touches.
Look at the work
A light bouquet in deep darkness
The vase occupies the bottom of the composition, slightly off-center, and is distinguished by its cream and gray blue highlights. The stems spread out in a fan shape before disappearing into the black green background.
The bouquet is not organized by clearly separated species. A red mass dominates the center, surrounded by small pale corollas and long leaves; the table, almost confused with the background, provides only a dark seat.
This 41.3 × 33 cm Parisian oil on canvas has no known F or JH number. The fact sheet indicates that she was found in a house in Milwaukee in 1990 and authenticated the following year.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The small vertical surface is based on a very direct opposition between light ceramic, central red and dark background.
The vase as a source of light
The ivory and pale blue touches give the container an isolated shine. Its narrow shape stabilizes the irregular expansion of the stems.
A red center without a closed outline
The large flower or mass of red flowers is constructed by an accumulation of touches. Its edges mingle with greens instead of being drawn.
The dark remains colorful
The background combines deep green, blue-black and some brown accents. These variations prevent the space from becoming a uniformly black surface.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The information available is less abundant than for works kept in museums; the sheet clearly distinguishes established data from absent catalog numbers.
Found in Milwaukee in 1990
The painting was reported in a private home before being examined and recognized as a work by Van Gogh in 1991.
No F or JH number
The absence of reference in the two usual catalogs explains why the sheet favors dimensions, period and private provenance.
Parisian still lifes
Between 1886 and 1887, Van Gogh painted numerous bouquets to experiment with colors more varied than the dark range of his Dutch years.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the modesty of the format, the nuanced whiteness of the vase and the subtle transitions in the black green background without hardening the contours of the flowers.
- The white vase with blue-gray shadows
- The central red floral mass
- The little pink and white flowers
- The long green leaves
- The slightly modulated black green background
