At daybreak, two wooded banks frame a pink and purple opening onto the Seine. The trees on the left form a deep mass, while the right bank dissolves in the mist. The water takes up these silhouettes and stretches them towards the foreground. Monet thus constructs an almost symmetrical landscape, the contours of which remain in motion under the emerging light.

Look at the work

The trees and their reflection surround a clear gap where the mist erases the limit of the river

The left bank occupies almost the entire height and brings together the darkest blue greens. Opposite, the vegetation becomes more distant and colder. The two masses do not come together: a luminous opening remains in the center and gives depth to the scene.

The reflection reverses the trees without reproducing them exactly. The verticals break upon contact with small horizontal touches which suggest the current. Roses, pale yellows and mauves descend from the sky to the foreground.

Monet makes a passage from the luminous center: the river seems to lead less towards a place than towards the light itself in the morning.

A series prepared from a workshop boat

Monet spotted the pattern along the Seine and worked at dawn from a converted boat. The Met recalls that the series, begun in 1896, was not completed until 1897 after periods of bad weather.

Flexible symmetry

The edges and their reflections create a balance around the center, but their shapes differ. On the left, the mass is dense and vertical; on the right, it is more open. This asymmetry prevents the image from becoming static.

Close values for painting mist

The contrasts remain moderate. Greens contain blue and purple, roses are gray, and shadows never turn black. Reproduction must preserve these small temperature differences.

A narrow central opening

The clear gap occupies little width, but it organizes the entire composition. Its shape and vertical reflection create distance. Widening it would cause the banks to lose their enveloping character.

Blue green, mauve and pale pink

The cold palette is warmed by the central sky and its reflection. The colors penetrate each other; a pink that is too bright or a green that is too saturated would break the morning atmosphere.

Matter03

Contours blended in small touches

Trees are not blurry in the photographic sense. They are constructed by numerous visible gestures with overlapping edges. This vibration must remain present in oil reproduction.

Monet gets up at dawn and works on several paintings according to the evolution of the light. He then takes them together in the workshop in order to maintain the precise differences between each moment of the series.

A series shown by Georges Petit in 1898

Fifteen Mornings on the Seine were exhibited at the Georges Petit gallery in 1898. They share a similar point of view, but vary in mist, the opening of the sky and the temperature of the reflections.
