À propos de l’œuvre

Panier de pommes de terre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Potato basket, F100Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A basket is overflowing with potatoes, while around twenty tubers roll on the table around him. Van Gogh transforms this humble subject into a study of weight, texture and brown values.

Look at the work

A full basket surrounded by scattered potatoes

The basket occupies the center and is read by its light wicker bands. The potatoes rise in a pyramid above the edge, with irregular shapes that the light brings out one by one.

In the foreground, the scattered tubers form a wide curve. The green-brown background, almost empty, isolates the harvest and extends the shadows of the table without creating a clear break.

Basket of potatoes F100/JH931 is an oil on canvas of 45 × 60.5 cm painted in Nuenen in September 1885. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0153V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This still life is based on a very limited range. Van Gogh, however, differentiates each tuber by its silhouette, its eyes, its reflections and its position, while giving the basket a solid horizontal architecture.

01

The basket builds the center

Its braided strands alternate light lines and deep shadows. This regular structure contrasts with the bumpy potatoes which overflow on all sides.

02

The tubers form a circular rhythm

Those in the foreground lead the gaze from left to right before bringing it back towards the central pile. The differences between the shapes prevent the whole thing from becoming a compact mass.

03

The color remains inland

Brown, olive, ocher and gray make up almost the entire canvas. The small cream reflections are enough to shape the volumes without breaking the dark unity.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F100/JH931 and inventory s0153V1962 distinguish this version from F116/JH934, another basket of potatoes from the Van Gogh Museum.

Version

F100, not F116

F100 shows a central basket surrounded by numerous scattered potatoes. F116 has a different format and layout; catalog numbers avoid confusion.

Exercise

A study of dark values

The reduced palette allows Van Gogh to study how small variations of brown, green and ocher can render volume and material.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must preserve the wicker strips, the pyramid of tubers, the isolated potatoes in the foreground, the small cream reflections and the very deep olive background.

  • The irregular edge of the basket
  • Horizontal wicker strands
  • Overflowing potatoes
  • The curve of the tubers in the foreground
  • The olive nuances of the background and the table
