Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · February 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Gnarled branches covered with white and pink flowers stand out against a turquoise sky. Van Gogh paints this large canvas to celebrate the birth of his nephew Vincent Willem and transforms spring into an image of renewal.
Look at the work
The trunk enters the field from below then divides into branches which run the entire width. Some branches are cut by the edges, others end in pink buds or small white corollas surrounded by brown.
No landscape appears behind the tree. Turquoise blue acts as a luminous surface, animated by discreet variations. This close framing and sharp contours recall the Japanese prints that Van Gogh collected and studied.
The almond tree, the first tree to flower in spring, here becomes the direct sign of a birth and a beginning.
Composition, touch and color
The work s0176V1962 can be recognized by its large horizontal format, the turquoise background without horizon and the main branch which rises from the lower edge.
The tree is never shown in full. Branches enter and exit the image, as in prints where a fragment is enough to construct the space.
Blue occupies the entire surface but is not a uniform flat area. Lighter, greener passages give it vibration and depth.
Closed buds, open petals, pink accents and emerging leaves vary constantly. This diversity prevents flowers from becoming a mechanical pattern.
