La Manneporte in Étretat W832hand painted reproduction

The Manneporte forms a massive arch above a green and blue sea, while two tiny figures stand in its shadow at the foot of the cliff. Painted in 1883, this 65.4 × 81.3 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 51.30.5 and corresponds to Wildenstein 832.

Look at the work

Two silhouettes are enough to make the ark gigantic

The cliff fills the upper two thirds and completely closes the right side. Its arch cuts out a luminous opening in the center left, where we can see the sea and a fragment of rock. Under this vault, two figures reduced to a few touches give scale.

The rock combines beige, pink, green and purple under a pale blue sky. In the shadow of the arch, the tones become blue and mauve without losing their transparency. The sea advances in short waves of turquoise, olive green and cream.

In W832, the Manneporte appears immense because Monet contrasts its colorful mass with two almost invisible figures and the clear opening of the arch.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A framing that refuses the panoramic view

The cliff is cut from the top and the right edge. This proximity transforms the geological formation into monumental architecture rather than picturesque coastal detail.

02

The opening organizes the light

The clear passage under the arch pierces the rock mass and leads towards the distant sea. Its irregular shape avoids symmetry and accentuates the weight of the vault.

03

The rock dissolved in color

The Met points out that light seems to dematerialize the cliff. The pink, green, blue and cream touches make its surface vibrate instead of describing it with a uniform brown pattern.

Read this specific version

The sheet uses a single exact image of W832. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,761 px, kept at its available resolution without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the mass cut by the frame

The top and right side of the cliff must come out of the field. Adding space around it would reduce the impression of scale and change the immersive nature of the view.

Color02

Keep the two small figures

They remain tiny and discreet under the arch, but their presence is decisive. Enlarging them would shift the composition towards a narrative scene.

Matter03

Keeping colors in the shadows

Blue, mauve, green and pink cross the area under the vault. A black or brown shadow would cut the arch off from the rest of the marine atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents La Manneporte in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1883, 65.4 × 81.3 cm, inventory 51.30.5 and Wildenstein 832.

Campaign01

Twenty views started in Étretat in February 1883

The Met indicates that Monet spent most of February 1883 on the Normandy coast and produced twenty paintings. The cliffs become a laboratory of framing and light.

Scale02

Two figures under the natural arch

Barely visible at the foot of the vault, the silhouettes are an essential landmark. Their smallness immediately makes the height of the Manneporte noticeable.

Provenance03

The William Church Osborn legacy of 1951

After its passage through several collections, the painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the bequest of William Church Osborn. It has since been numbered 51.30.5.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 832 version of the Metropolitan Museum
  • The monumental cliff cut by the frame
  • The two tiny figures under the arch
  • The turquoise sea bustling with short waves

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This powerful composition is suitable for a living room, office or large entrance. A sand, bluish gray or sage green wall and a dark wooden frame accompany the mineral tones while letting the arch dominate.
