Reproduction details

Claude Monet · An orchard laden with fruit in 1878 · Wildenstein 488

Apple trees near Vétheuil W488hand painted reproduction

On a slope overlooking the valley, apple trees laden with fruit occupy the entire foreground. The red apples disperse in a mass of green leaves, while on the left the land descends towards the valley of Vienne-en-Arthies and the hamlet of Millonnets. Monet transforms an ordinary rural motif into a study of density, light and depth.

Look at the work

Apple trees heavy with fruit dominate the valley

The large tree on the right advances towards the viewer through its oblique trunk and its very dense foliage. The apples are not aligned: they appear as small touches of red, orange and pink in the middle of the greens. A younger tree in the center takes up this pattern on a reduced scale.

On the left, the ground opens onto the valley in successive planes. Hedges, paths and plots are indicated by green, brown and light bands. In the distance, a few pale houses in the hamlet blend into the hills; their small size measures the depth behind the nearby orchard.

The harvest becomes a constellation of warm touches placed against the greens of the foliage and the pale lands of the valley.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately dense foreground

The large apple tree closes the right and hides part of the landscape. This mass gives the valley visible on the left a much greater distance.

02

Fruits as a colorful rhythm

Reds, pinks and oranges are scattered throughout the leaves without regular outline. Their frequency varies depending on the light and depth of the foliage.

03

A valley built in strips

The plots and hedges are not drawn in detail. Their changes in direction and value are enough to bring the land down and then up.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference comes from documentation dedicated to the old Whittemore collection. The public file measures 1000 × 742 px; it is preserved without enlargement and converted to WebP, with the documentary grain visible rather than artificial sharpness.

Composition01

A large mass on the right

The main apple tree takes up almost half the size. The valley opens to the left, creating a very lively asymmetrical balance.

Color02

Reds in several greens

The fruits change from pink to dark red; the leaves mix bluish greens, yellows and almost blacks depending on their exposure.

Matter03

A key that changes with distance

The nearby foliage is made up of short, contrasting gestures. The hills and distant houses are summed up by wider and lighter passages.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This 62 × 82.5 cm version is identified as Wildenstein 488 and remains in a private collection.

Location01

The Vienne-en-Arthies valley

The viewpoint is located east of Vétheuil. Behind the trees, the land descends towards the valley and reveals the hamlet of Millonnets.

Exposure02

Presented by Durand-Ruel in 1883

The painting appears in the Monet exhibition organized by the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1883, alongside around sixty landscapes.

Provenance03

Acquired by Harris Whittemore in 1892

The Naugatuck Historical Society documents its acquisition by American collector Harris Whittemore and its presentation in the family home.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the weight of the large apple tree without blocking the details of the branches.
  • Divide the fruits into irregular touches of several reds.
  • Maintain the small scale of the houses in the valley.
  • Differentiate the terrain plans by their directions as much as by their colors.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Deep greens, fruity reds and pink earths create a generous presence. This work is suitable for a dining room, living room or open kitchen; a walnut, oak or matte bronze frame highlights the orchard without cooling its light.
