From the right bank of the Seine, Monet looks at the hill of Port-Villez beyond the river, its low islets and a few houses with red roofs. Look at the work

The Seine connects the nearby reeds to the Port-Villez hill

High reeds close the lower left corner and place the viewer at the water's edge. The river occupies the center, interrupted by two islets of foliage; beyond, the houses slide to the foot of a hill which fills almost the entire background.

The dark greens of the banks contrast with the silvery, blue and pink reflections of the Seine. The cloudy sky takes up the light tones of the water, while a few red roofs punctuate the middle of the painting and give a human measure to the relief.

In W836, Monet does not separate the earth from its reflection: reeds, islets, houses and hills are connected by the same colorful touches that cross the Seine.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A foreground immersed in the reeds

Plants cut by the lower edge provide immediate proximity. They frame the water without creating a continuous barrier and lead towards the central island.

02

A hill that replaces the horizon

The relief of Port-Villez rises very high in the image. Its dark silhouette stands out against the clear sky and stabilizes the more mobile reflections of the river.

03

Houses reduced to accents

The facades and roofs occupy only a narrow strip. Red, cream and gray are enough to mark the village without transforming the landscape into a topographical description.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W836 is used. The real WebP measures 850 × 684 px, kept at the public resolution of the work without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the framing from the shore

The reeds must remain dense but partially cut. Their presence in the foreground is essential to locate the view before crossing the river.

Color02

Keep highlights warm in water

The Seine is not limited to blue and green: pink, cream and ocher respond to the sky and the houses. These shades give its vibration to the surface.

Matter03

Differentiate between islets and hills

The islets receive compact and very dark touches; the hill mixes wider gestures and light passages. This difference maintains several depths.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museo Soumaya documents this Landscape in Port-Villez from 1883, oil on canvas of 65 × 81.5 cm, signed lower left and listed Wildenstein 836.

Viewpoint01

The hill observed from the right bank

The pattern shows the other bank of the Seine and the houses partly hidden behind the islands. This superposition explains the particular depth of the composition.

Provenance02

A work passed by Durand-Ruel

The Museo Soumaya notice indicates that the Durand-Ruel gallery acquired the painting from Monet. It then went through several American collections before its sale in 1992.

Object03

A documented polychrome and gold frame

The museum also publishes the measurements of the framed work, 95 × 111.2 × 11 cm. The canvas itself bears the signature and date Claude Monet 83 at the bottom left.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 836 version
  • The reeds very close to the lower edge
  • The dark islets that fragment the Seine
  • The red roofs placed at the foot of the hill

A palette designed with the room

Deep greens, bluish grays and cream highlights are suitable for a living room, entryway or office. A linen, sage or pearl gray wall and natural wood extend its atmosphere along the Seine.
