An emerald green sea occupies almost the entire frame, lifted by rows of waves that break into loops of white foam. Above a very high horizon, pink, yellow and blue clouds cross a turquoise sky. Signed and dated Claude Monet 97 lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 73.5 × 101 cm is kept at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo under number P.1959-0149 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1444.

Look at the work

The Pourville swell painted as a continuous rhythm

No coast, boat or figure interrupts the view. Parallel swell lines progress from the horizon to the foreground, where the waves become larger and more transparent. The sky only occupies an upper band.

Greens, turquoise, blue and white dominate the sea. The ridges are traced by curved and rapid gestures, sometimes almost calligraphic. In the sky, pink and yellow warm the palette without calming the agitation.

The subject is neither a specific place nor a maritime anecdote: it is the repetition of waves, each crest transforming the light and the material of the painting.

A work from the Matsukata collection

The painting was probably purchased from Monet by Kôjiro Matsukata around December 1921. She joined the Japanese museum in 1959 after its transfer by the French government.

The date visible on the canvas confirms the campaign of 1897, when Monet returned to the Normandy coast and took up the motif of the sea in Pourville.
