Look at the work

The Aval Gate resists, the sea invades everything else

From the window of his hotel, Monet frames Étretat beach in heavy winter weather. The Porte d'Aval and its needle close the horizon; in the foreground, three caloges - old boats covered with thatch - rub shoulders with boats and two fishermen.

The coastline is reduced to a narrow strip. Between it and the cliff, the waves occupy the center of the painting in a network of white, green, gray and pink loops. Oblique rain erases the boundary between sky and sea.

The subject here is not just Étretat: it is the way in which a familiar landscape changes its appearance under the pressure of wind and light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand the strength of this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A cliff made of strata

Short, horizontal touches highlight the layers of chalk. Purples, ochres and blues prevent the rock mass from becoming uniform.

02

Foam as writing

Monet superimposes commas, loops and clear impastos. These quick gestures give the waves direction and density rather than a fixed outline.

03

Tiny but essential figures

Fishermen and boats give the scale of the storm. Their dark silhouettes stabilize the lower part against the movement of the water.

Composition01

Downstream Gate and Foam

The cliff appears solid from a distance, but the zoom reveals a discontinuous construction where each colored streak responds to the curves of the waves.

Color02

Boats, fishermen and caloges

The small brown and black shapes of the shore contrast with the pearly whites of the sea. They also tell the story of the maritime life of the village in the 19th century.

Loyalty03

Benchmarks to preserve

The variety of bluish grays of the sky and the sea. The clear impastos which make the foam without smoothing it. The Porte d'Aval and its needle clearly separated. The silhouettes of the fishermen and the caloges in the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The facts below concern this specific version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Series01

Around thirty views

In February 1883, Monet dedicated nearly thirty paintings to the motif of Étretat; the museum presents it as the most ambitious and largest of the stay.

Viewpoint02

Painted from a hotel

The high framing on the beach matches the view obtained from the room where Monet worked sheltered from bad weather.

Acquisition03

An early purchase

Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting the year it was created. The Lyon museum acquired it in 1902, at a still pioneering date for the entry of impressionism into public collections.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on very precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The variety of bluish grays of the sky and the sea
  • The clear impastos that make the foam smooth
  • The Aval gate and its needle clearly separated
  • The silhouettes of the fishermen and the caloges in the foreground
