À propos de l’œuvre

La mer du Havre, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A clear wave facing a black sail · Carnegie Museum of Art

The Sea in Le Havre W112hand painted reproduction

A long wave winds towards the beach and fills the foreground with white, green and blue foam. Offshore, a single black sail stands out in front of the lower line of the coast; above, an immense sky accumulates gray clouds. Monet contrasts the physical proximity of the surf with the almost silent distance of the boat.

Look at the work

The movement of the wave meets the apparent stillness of the horizon

The dark beach enters from the lower left corner and forms a short diagonal. Just ahead, the foam occupies a wide white and gray-green band; a higher wave rises in the center before falling to the right.

The black sail is placed slightly to the right of the center, with a small hull and a barely indicated figure. The distant coastline remains very low. Clouds occupy almost two thirds of the height, in touches of blue, gray, cream and slate.

A single sail is enough to measure space; all the energy of the canvas is concentrated in the wave which advances towards the spectator.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A dominant sky

The low height of the horizon gives great amplitude to the clouds. Their repeated touches create a general movement that responds to the small waves of the sea.

02

A scum diagonal

The surf line starts from the beach and crosses the foreground to the right. It brings the viewer closer to the water and prevents the landscape from being reduced to horizontal bands.

03

Sailing as an absolute contrast

Its almost black shape is the darkest point of the composition. It gains presence thanks to the whites and light blues that surround it, despite its small size.

Read this specific version

The image corresponds to inventory 53.22 of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Wildenstein version 112. The front file of 2098 × 1514 px has been preserved without enlargement and encoded in WebP.

Composition01

Foam is not uniformly white

Blue grays, pale greens and some beige shadows give weight and transparency to the surf.

Color02

The coast remains a very discreet line

It locates the depth without brutally separating the sky from the sea. Its contours must remain low and slightly irregular.

Matter03

The black sail retains a small colorful reflection

Fine blue and brown shades shape its surface. A flat black would destroy the vibration of this central accent.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1868, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 81.6 cm is kept at the Carnegie Museum of Art under inventory 53.22 and classified Wildenstein 112.

Normandy01

The coastline of Monet's youth

Raised in Le Havre, Monet knows directly the beaches, ports and rapid changes in the maritime sky. This experience fueled his early research into waves and the atmosphere.

Subject02

A navy reduced to a few elements

Beach, wave, coast and sail are enough to organize the canvas. This economy makes the differences in material between foam, deep water and clouds more noticeable.

Collection03

Carnegie Museum of Art, inventory 53.22

The museum maintains the work under number 53.22 and presents it as a purchase by exchange. She was notably featured in the exhibition Impressionism in a New Light in 2012.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Place the horizon low under the big cloudy sky.
  • Give volume to the central wave and its foam.
  • Keep the sail small but strongly contrasted.
  • Vary the whites, greens and blues in the foreground.
