Low tide at Petites-Dalles W905hand painted reproduction

At low tide, the cliff of Amont des Petites-Dalles advances in the image like a wall of yellow, pink and orange chalk. The water removed leaves a brilliant shore where a few bathers are nothing more than colorful accents; the blue-purple of the sky makes the rock even brighter. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 84", this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-16. It corresponds to Wildenstein 905.

Look at the work

An almost abstract cliff dominates the shore, while figures and reflections discreetly measure its scale

The rock mass occupies the entire right half and rises to the upper edge. Its vertical front is cut by purple hollows and warm edges; the grassy plateau, seen in shortcut, forms a red and green diagonal. On the left, the deep blue sky and the sea open a cold counterweight to this monumental presence.

The bottom of the image combines shallow water, wet sand and clumps of algae in horizontal touches. Near the foot of the cliff, bathers are indicated by a few red, blue and brown lines. Their minimal design forces the eye to reconstruct them and reinforces, by contrast, the elemental power of the site.

For the Museum Barberini, few of Monet's late coastal landscapes show the impressionist principle so clearly: the cliff is not a fixed shape, but what the eye perceives of it in very precise midday light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The cliff is built by color more than by design

Orange, pink, yellow, white and red are placed in often unmixed touches. Blue and purple shadows hollow out the wall without drawing rigid geological boundaries.

02

The contrast of the sky dramatizes the chalk

The almost uniform purple-blue on the left frames the warm summit of the cliff. This complementary opposition gives the impression that the rock emits its own light.

03

The bathers engage the gaze

First confused with the strike keys, they gradually become recognizable. Monet thus involves the viewer in reading the image and keeps humans on a landscape scale.

Read this specific version

The single image exactly represents the MB-Mon-16 inventory. The 2,200 × 1,784 px file is kept at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Maintain the diagonal thrust of the plate

The summit descends towards the sea while advancing in the frame. Its exact slope gives the cliff its volume and prevents it from resembling a simple front wall.

Color02

Keep the impasto hot on the chalk

The thick material evokes mineral texture and captures light. It must remain more assertive than the fluid passages of sky and water.

Matter03

Preserve the figures as small touches

Bathers should not become detailed silhouettes. Their discretion is essential to the scale of the site and the visual experience described by the museum notice.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Barberini documents Low tide at Petites-Dalles, oil on canvas from 1884, 60 × 73 cm, MB-Mon-16 inventory and Wildenstein 905 catalog.

Location01

A seaside resort on the Alabaster Coast near Fécamp

Les Petites-Dalles were known for their very clear limestone cliffs. Léon Monet, Claude's younger brother, owned a summer house there, which personally linked the artist to this Norman sector.

Series02

Three views of the Amont cliff in August 1884

Monet returned for a brief campaign after four paintings painted in the surrounding area in 1880 and 1881. W903 and W904 show the same massif under other conditions and framing.

Provenance03

Purchased directly from Monet by Durand-Ruel on November 17, 1884

The painting then passed into the collection of Charles T. Yerkes, returned to Durand-Ruel in 1912 and finally joined the Hasso Plattner collection in 2016.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 905 version and the MB-Mon-16 inventory
  • Upstream Cliff lit by midday sun
  • The blue-purple sky contrasts with the warm tones of chalk
  • Bathers reduced to a few accents on the shore

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This bright cliff works in a living room, office or wide entrance. A slate blue wall, light sand or pale terracotta and a natural oak frame reinforce the oppositions of the canvas without weighing down the coast.
