A fishing boat advances almost straight towards the viewer on a black and green sea. Its brown sail swells under a leaden sky, while the French flag slams at the top of the mast. Two sailors, tiny facing the elements, stand out between the crests of foam. Monet builds a tense navy where the simplicity of the drawing reinforces the threat of time.
Look at the work
The boat is placed slightly to the right of the center. Its mast rises almost to the upper edge and divides the sky; the triangular sail, seen at an angle, takes up the inclination of the large cloud mass on the left. The two fishermen, one dark and the other dressed in muffled red, give the subject his human tension.
The clear line of the horizon cuts the canvas about two-fifths of its height. In the foreground, a large white wave visually holds the advance of the boat. Around it, black greens and foam are placed in thick touches, sometimes with a knife.
The whole scene is based on direct opposition: the firm geometry of the boat confronts the rhythmic disorder of the waves and clouds.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Clark Art Institute highlights the exceptional rectilinear character of the canvas. A single vertical mast and an almost continuous horizon structure the two large bands of sky and sea, without coastal decoration.
Unlike many of Monet's marines, light does not invade the scene. The black-green of the water, the heavy grays of the sky and the brown sail create a dark climate, crossed only by foam and the luminous horizon.
The work dates from 1866, when the painter asserted his manner. The large touches and knife passages emphasize the flatness of the surface while giving the waves a physical presence.

The visual corresponds to Seascape, Storm from the Clark Art Institute, inventory 1955.561 and Wildenstein number 86. The image of 1952 × 1460 px was kept at its native definition then encoded as a real WebP.
Emerald greens, browns and blues appear under very dark areas. White scum must remain thick and irregular so as not to become a graphic pattern.
Its gray brown is slightly warmer than the clouds. The ropes and folds are enough to shape it without excessively lightening its surface.
Blue, white and red can be read at the top of the mast without attracting the whole eye. Its direction reinforces the feeling of wind and the general inclination of the scene.
Documented benchmarks
Signed lower right and painted in 1866, this oil on canvas measures 48.7 × 64.6 cm. It is kept at the Clark Art Institute under the 1955.561 inventory and classified Wildenstein 86.
Monet grew up on the Normandy coast and knows the shapes of boats as well as the rapid changes of the English Channel. The boat does not serve as a simple accessory: its trajectory and the presence of sailors give the landscape a dimension of danger.
The mast divides the canvas while the horizon crosses it horizontally. The wave in the foreground, however, prevents this geometry from freezing the scene and gives the impression that the boat is going to enter the viewer's space.
After several European owners and visits to Durand-Ruel, the work was purchased by Robert Sterling Clark in 1950. It entered the Clark Art Institute when the collection was created in 1955.
