Champ de blé à l'alouette, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June-July 1887 · Paris

Lark wheat field, F310Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The gaze is placed almost at the height of the stems. The ears, poppies and blueberries fill the bottom of the canvas, while a small bird rises above the field under a gray-blue sky covered with light touches.

Look at the work

A Parisian field seen from the edge of the wheat

Van Gogh reduces the landscape to three very simple bands: the light stubble in the foreground, the moving mass of wheat in the center and the wide open sky. The low viewpoint almost removes the horizon and brings the viewer closer to the plants.

The bird, tiny but clearly detached in the sky, gives momentum to the composition. In the field, a few red and blue accents signal the flowers without interrupting the tight network of green, yellow and gray-blue stems.

Painted in Paris in June-July 1887, Field of Wheat with Lark is an oil on canvas measuring 53.7 × 65.2 cm. Work F310/JH1274 is housed at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0197V1962, where its official English title is Wheatfield with Partridge.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum highlights the immersion produced by the very low viewpoint. The lighter palette belongs to Van Gogh's Parisian research, but the physical proximity to the land is reminiscent of the rural landscapes he painted before his arrival in the capital.

01

Wheat is built touch by touch

Small superimposed diagonals describe the stems, leaves and ears. Their orientation constantly changes and makes the field vibrate as if under the effect of the wind.

02

The sky does not serve as a simple background

His pale blue, gray and cream brushstrokes extend the rhythm of the field, but with a more spaced material that lets the upper part breathe.

03

The bird concentrates the movement

Placed slightly to the right of the center, it introduces an upward direction above a composition dominated by horizontals.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The traditional French title speaks of a lark, while the current Van Gogh Museum notice identifies the bird as a partridge. References F310, JH1274 and s0197V1962 allow this 1887 painting to be unambiguously identified.

Subject

A countryside found at the heart of the Parisian stay

Van Gogh then lived in the capital, but here returns to a familiar rural theme: a summer field observed very closely, without monuments or human silhouettes.

Flowers

Poppies and blueberries among the ears

The museum highlights these small red and blue flowers, discreet accents which diversify the large expanse of gray greens and muted yellows.

Collection

The Van Gogh family collection

The painting remained with Theo, then with Jo van Gogh-Bonger and Vincent Willem van Gogh before being transferred to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the very low point of view, the three bands of the landscape, the isolated bird, the small red and blue flowers and above all the multitude of distinct touches which animate the wheat.

  • The bird above the field
  • Poppies and blueberries
  • The network of oblique rods
  • The strip of light stubble
  • The gray-blue sky with a light touch
