Perspective is born from brushstrokes
The elongated keys follow the relief of the furrows. Their gradual tightening towards the wall builds depth more effectively than a detailed preparatory drawing.

Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · November -December 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
The sun rises above the Alpilles and floods a field enclosed by a wall. Green, yellow and purple furrows converge towards the horizon, while circles of light fill almost the entire sky.
Look at the work
The land occupies approximately two thirds of the canvas. Its furrows start from the lower edge then tighten towards the red-brown wall, creating a very strong perspective without characters or tools.
Beyond the wall, a few trees, a small construction and the Alpilles form a narrow band. The solar disk and its yellow rings dominate this horizon, opposed to the violets of the mountain and the furrows.
The landscape is both enclosed and expansive: the wall physically cuts the field, but the converging lines and the sun's radiation project the gaze well beyond.
Composition, touch and color
This private collection painting is cataloged F737/JH1862. It measures 71 × 90.5 cm and was painted in Saint-Rémy at the end of 1889.
The elongated keys follow the relief of the furrows. Their gradual tightening towards the wall builds depth more effectively than a detailed preparatory drawing.
The sun and young yellow-green shoots oppose the mountains and purple shadows. This complementarity maintains the light without erasing the morning freshness.
The keys rotate around the solar disk in increasingly wider rings. This concentric movement contrasts with all the diagonals that travel the field.
Documented benchmarks
Enclosed field with rising sun is an oil on canvas of 71 × 90.5 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy between November and December 1889. It bears the references F737/JH1862.
The motif belongs to the series of enclosed grounds visible from the establishment of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. The wall separates this field from the agricultural landscape which rises towards the Alpilles.
Vincent and Theo sent this painting to the seventh exhibition of the group Les XX. It was shown there at the beginning of 1890, a few weeks after its creation.
The painting is not attached to a public museum collection today. Its identification is based on the concordant references F737 and JH1862.
