Father Paul W744hand painted reproduction

Wearing his white hat and wearing his cook's jacket, Paul Antoine Graff appears in bust in front of a blue-green background. His thick beard, dark scarf and pink face are constructed with a free and colorful touch. Painted in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 64.5 × 52.1 cm is kept at the Belvedere in Vienna under number 540 and corresponds to Wildenstein 744.

Look at the work

A cook's portrait where white becomes a colored material

The face is placed slightly above the center, under a loose hat which occupies almost the entire width of the upper part. The close framing cuts the arms and focuses attention on the look, beard and professional attributes of the model.

The jacket is never treated as a uniform white surface. Pink, blue, pale green and cream reflect shadows and reflections. The blue-green scarf forms the darkest accent, connecting the beard to the bottom of the composition.

Monet does not seek to smooth the features of his model: he creates the face, the hat and the jacket with a mosaic of colors which retains all the energy of the encounter.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A frontal but lively framing

The bust almost completely fills the canvas, while the head turns slightly. This inflection and the offbeat gaze avoid the rigidity of a posed portrait.

02

A beard built in directions

Blue, gray, green, brown and white follow the curls and strands. The keys change orientation around the mouth and chin, giving volume without a closed design.

03

A background that envelops the figure

The blue-green background takes on the cold tones of the hat, beard and scarf. This continuity vibrates the contours and integrates the cook with the luminous atmosphere.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W744 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 2,422 × 3,000 px, since reduced from the file of 2,832 × 3,508 px distributed by Belvedere, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the large asymmetrical hat

It leans to the left and extends widely around the skull. Its flexible shape is an essential reference point for the model's silhouette and profession.

Color02

Preserve colors in whites

The hat and jacket contain pinks, blues and greens. Neutralizing them would remove the impressionist principle that animates the surface.

Matter03

Keep the scarf as an anchor

Its deeper blue-green tone stabilizes the lower part of the face. It clearly separates the beard from the jacket without resorting to a black outline.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Belvedere preserves Der Koch (Father Paul), oil on canvas from 1882, 64.5 × 52.1 cm, inventory 540 and Wildenstein 744.

Model01

Paul Antoine Graff, hotelier and restaurateur from Pourville

Nicknamed Father Paul, he runs the establishment where Monet stayed during his campaign on the Normandy coast. His cooking outfit allows him to be identified immediately.

Signature02

Claude Monet 82 in the upper right part

The inscription stands out directly against the blue-green background. Its high position is unusual but perfectly suited to the very tight framing of the bust.

Collection03

Acquired at the Secession Impressionist Exhibition in 1903

The painting joins the Viennese collection on this date and today bears the inventory number 540 of Belvedere.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 744 version
  • The white hat widely deployed
  • The beard modeled in blue, green and gray
  • The Claude Monet 82 signature at the top right
