Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1897 · Private collection · W1484
A dark bank descends from the upper left corner and envelops almost half of the canvas. On the right, a pink, pale yellow and light blue opening reveals distant trees. Their light extends vertically into the Seine, but the current fragments it into horizontal lines. Monet makes this opposition between a plant curtain and a luminous gap the real subject of the morning.

Look at the work
The left bank is built with deep green, petrol blue, purple and some turquoise shards. The branches fall in a large curve above the water, without a closed outline. Lower down, their reflection changes direction and becomes more horizontal. This dense mass gives the composition its weight, but its cold colors prevent it from transforming into a simple black shadow.
In the right half, the trees on the other bank dissolve into purple, pink and cream layers. A very light band opens between their silhouettes, then is reflected up to the lower edge. The vertical passage is continually cut by blue and green touches. The canvas seems almost symmetrical at first glance, while each bank, each interval and each reflection has a different shape.
Light does not enter through the sky: it emerges between the trees and finds a path into the river to the foreground.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The greens on the left bank are mixed with blue, purple and pink. Maintaining these gaps is essential to give depth without artificially thickening the shade.
Distant trees emerge from the mist in small differences in value. Too precise a drawing would remove the atmosphere; too uniform a fade would make their rhythm disappear.
Pink and cream descend into the water, but horizontal touches of the current interrupt them. This fragmentation produces the central vibration of the canvas.
Details and visual documents
The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Documented benchmarks
This sheet documents version W1484, signed and dated 1897, distinct from the other Matinées sur la Seine painted by Monet in the same place.
This almost square oil on canvas is signed and dated Claude Monet 97 lower left. Christie's lists it under number 1484 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.
Monet completed twenty-two Mornings on the Seine in 1896 and 1897, near the confluence of the Epte and the Seine. He works from his workshop boat before sunrise to capture the very brief variations of mist and light.
Fifteen Mornings are brought together in the Monet exhibition of June 1898 at the Galerie Georges Petit. The documented provenance of W1484 includes the Wildenstein and Acquavella galleries before its entry into the current private collection.
