À propos de l’œuvre
Prairie avec des vaches, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1883 · The Hague, Netherlands
Meadow with cows, F15Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Three cows stand out in a hilly meadow, in front of an almost black row of trees. The very clear sky, loaded with cream and blue-gray clouds, transforms this modest pastoral scene into a study of light.
Look at the work
Three cattle in a meadow at sunset
A light cow appears near the center left, while two black and white piebald animals occupy the right. Their bodies are small but clearly isolated on the grass.
The undulations of the meadow lead towards a low barrier then towards the curtain of trees. The sky, much brighter, opens the composition above this dark line.
Meadow with Cows F15/JH387 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 31.5 × 44 cm, painted in The Hague in August 1883. It belongs today to the Museo Soumaya in Mexico.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh organizes the scene into three registers: the eventful meadow, the compact trees and the cloudy sky. The cows form small, clear punctuations at the meeting point of these areas.
The furrows enliven the meadow
Curved touches of green, brown and ocher describe the hollows of the ground. They create a movement that converges towards the group of animals.
The trees form a dark frieze
The foliage is treated as an almost continuous mass, with a few gaps. This band gives weight to the horizon and brings out the sky.
Cows measure space
Their small size makes the extent of the meadow noticeable. The white markings of their coat respond to clouds and visually connect the earth to the sky.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The references F15/JH387, the format of 31.5 × 44 cm and the conservation at the Museo Soumaya distinguish this painting from the studies of Reclining Cow F1b and F1c carried out at the same period.
A work by the Museo Soumaya
The painting is kept in Mexico City in the collection of the Fundacion Carlos Slim. He joined the museum after several European collections.
A canvas fixed on a panel
The work was painted on canvas then mounted on a rigid support. This precision explains the variations in formulation between catalogs.
The countryside around The Hague
Van Gogh then observed the dunes, meadows and animals in the surrounding area. His palette remains linked to the painters of the Hague School, but the touch already becomes very personal.
