La Prairie de Limetz near Giverny W1198hand painted reproduction

A humid meadow unfolds under a luminous mist which almost erases the trees of Limetz and mixes the sky with the landscape. Look at the work

Mist removes the horizon and turns the meadow into a sheet of light

The foreground is occupied by a vast expanse of fresh grass, crossed by horizontal touches of blue, green and white. In the background, a few trees and buildings barely emerge into the atmosphere.

Pale yellow, soft green, blue gray and pink create a deliberately low contrast accord. The boundaries dissolve: air, humidity and reflections become as important as the pattern itself.

Monet does not describe Limetz by his houses or his paths: he makes the place recognized through a passing condition, that of a morning where the mist absorbs distances.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A horizon almost impossible to find

The boundary between the meadow and the sky is veiled by diffuse trees. This disappearance gives the horizontal format an atmospheric depth rather than geometric.

02

Horizontal keys in the foreground

Cold, clear lines stretch the grass widthwise and suggest moisture. They contrast with the very faded vertical shapes of the bottom.

03

A precise version of the prairies of 1888

W1198 is distinguished by its yellow-green range, its dense mist and the almost erased row of trees. It immediately precedes W1199 in the catalog raisonné.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1198 is used. The real WebP measures 474 × 333 px, best reliable public definition provided for this version, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain low contrast

The scene should not be artificially reinforced. Its strength lies in the gradual disappearance of shapes in humid air.

Color02

Preserve bruises in grass

They give the meadow its cold shine and prevent the greens from becoming uniform or decorative.

Matter03

Keep the bottom trees barely legible

Their presence must remain uncertain. Drawing them too clearly would remove the mist effect that identifies W1198.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Yoshino Gypsum Art Foundation documents La Prairie de Limetz near Giverny, oil on canvas from 1888, 65 × 92 cm, deposited at the Yamagata Art Museum and listed as Wildenstein 1198.

Location01

Limetz, in the immediate vicinity of Giverny

Monet explores the meadows around his house and along the Epte, favoring a morning atmosphere here rather than a spectacular topographical landmark.

Collection02

Yoshino Gypsum Collection

The work is part of the Japanese foundation and is on permanent deposit at the Yamagata Art Museum.

Series03

The transition from mist to luminous meadows

W1198 belongs to a small ensemble from 1888 where Monet observes the same terrain under different effects of humidity, sun and season.

  • The yellow and gray mist
  • The blue touches of the meadow
  • The row of trees almost erased
