A pink and ocher rocky coast juts out into a Mediterranean covered in blues, greens and purples, under a sky almost erased by light. Painted in 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 65.1 × 81.3 cm is kept at the Columbus Museum of Art under number 1957.061.064 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1185.

The mineral coast and the luminous water respond to each other touch by touch

The shore enters from the upper left corner, then recedes in a long pink diagonal to the horizon. The sea occupies more than half of the canvas and fills the crevices of the rocks in the foreground.

The rock mixes cream, pink, mauve and red earth; the water superimposes deep blue, turquoise, green and lilac. No rigid outline separates the two elements: their colors circulate and make the reverberation of the sun noticeable.

Monet does not paint a blue sea in front of a pink coast; it builds a continuous exchange of colors where water reflects stone and stone receives light from water.

A diagonal that opens the entire bay

The slope of the cape guides the gaze from near to far without a drawn line of perspective. Changes in scale and color are enough to create depth.

An almost tactile foreground

Nearby rocks are formed of short, thick and contrasting touches. Their material opposes the more horizontal and more fluid lines used for the sea.

The Antibes campaign of 1888

Monet stayed on the Côte d'Azur from January to May and produced around thirty-five views. He is looking for writing capable of translating a more intense light than that of Normandy.

Creams, purples, oranges and browns must remain visible. These breaks give the rocks their relief and their exposure to the sun.

Blues, greens and mauves are juxtaposed in short lines. A continuous blue surface would remove the transparency and vibration of the foreground.

Matter03

Keep the sky deliberately light

It takes up little space and remains very pale. Its role is to open the horizon without competing with the dense matter of the coast and the water.
