Meditation. Madame Monet on the W163 sofahand painted reproduction

Camille Monet is sitting on the edge of a flowered sofa, a red book placed in her hands. Her blue-black dress extends almost to the lower edge while a veiled window opens, on the right, a powerful band of light. In this interior painted during the years of exile in London, Monet contrasts the absorbed calm of the model with a profusion of fabrics, patterns and reflections.

Look at the work

The silence of the reading is measured by the light of the window

Camille occupies the left half without being centered. Her inclined bust and lowered gaze lead towards the little red book. The dress forms a large dark diagonal which crosses the seat and descends towards the foreground; its blues and greens absorb several colors of the decor.

The sofa is covered in a white fabric with pink flowers, highlighted by bands and folds. Behind him, a fireplace bears ceramics, while a fragment of a painting appears higher up. On the right, the dark curtain and the white curtain frame a luminous opening which balances the entire mass of the figure.

The book is tiny, but the lowered gaze, the close hands and the silent space of the sofa make it the psychological center of the painting.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A dark diagonal in a light rectangle

The dress connects the face to the lower edge and gives weight to the composition. The sofa and window, much lighter, stand out the silhouette without a strong outline.

02

Three families of textile patterns

Sofa flowers, seat stripes and carpet arabesques overlap. Monet differentiates them by scale and orientation rather than a careful decorative finish.

03

Light concentrated on the right edge

The curtain receives the most intense white. This side source spreads over the wall, cushions, face and wrists, then goes out into the skirt.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference corresponds to the RF 3665 inventory of the Musée d'Orsay. The public domain file of 3,172 × 2,020 px was reduced to 3,000 × 1,910 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

An off-center, deeply seated figure

Camille does not pose in front of the viewer. Her body sinks into the cushions, and the low line of the sofa accentuates the length of the dress.

Color02

A blue-black streaked with green

The garment is not a uniform mass. Touches of turquoise, dark green and blue illuminate the folds, while the red collar responds to the book.

Matter03

Objects sketched but characterized

Ceramics, frames, curtains and furniture legs are indicated quickly. However, each contributes to the depth and domestic atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 48.2 × 74.5 cm, painted around 1871, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 3665 and classified Wildenstein 163.

Model01

Camille Doncieux, Monet's first wife

Camille appears in several major works by the painter. Here, she is neither on a walk nor in an official pose: her reading and her withdrawn attitude give the portrait a rare intimacy.

Market02

A painting by Durand-Ruel from 1873

Paul Durand-Ruel probably owned the work from February 1873. It then passed to the Princess de Montbéliard, then to the Victor Chocquet and Raymond Koechlin collections.

Legacy03

Raymond and Lucie Koechlin give it to the State

Accepted in 1931 for the Louvre, the painting was then exhibited at the Jeu de Paume before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the relationship between the very dark dress, the flowered sofa and the white window.
  • Keep the little red book and collar as warm accents around the hands and face.
  • Differentiate the patterns of the sofa, rug and cushion without making them mechanical.
  • Maintain the inclination of the bust and the lowered gaze which give silence to the scene.
