In Pourville, the English Channel hits the coast under a wind-laden sky. Monet places the horizon very high and reserves most of the format for green, blue and purple water covered in foam. Painted in 1897 from a fisherman's shelter near the beach, this view does not describe an isolated wave: it makes you feel the rapid succession of blades and the light breaking on their surface.
Look at the work
Waves are constructed by oblique, curved, overlapping gestures. Deep greens change to turquoise, then blue-gray; the white and yellow ridges do not follow a regular pattern, but appear at irregular intervals like bursts of light. This diversity prevents the water from becoming a simple decorative strip.
The shore narrows to the left and the pale cliffs dissolve into the atmosphere. Above, the sky mixes gray, blue and pink without brutal contrast. The depth arises from the opposition between the nervous touch of the foreground and the finer passages of the horizon, not from a strong geometric perspective.
Monet does not freeze the storm: he organizes several speeds of water, wind and light on the canvas.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The sea occupies almost three quarters of the composition. This proportion gives the viewer the sensation of being at the water's edge and must be preserved in the reproduction, without artificially enlarging the strip of sky.
Short keys rise, plunge and cross. Some describe the foam, others the dark slope of a blade. Their variety gives movement; too regular a repetition would make the sea still.
Blue and green dominate, but small cream, pink and yellow notes appear in the sky and foam. They connect the different areas and avoid a uniformly gray interpretation.

The cliff on the left is small, but it provides the scale of the landscape and stabilizes the vast movement of the sea. Its outline remains deliberately softened by humid air.
The colors of the water alternate between green transparency and blue depth. The foam is not white everywhere: it receives yellow, mauve and gray depending on the light.
The thickest and most visible gestures are concentrated in the lower part. Near the horizon, the material becomes lighter, which creates an atmospheric distance without reducing the intensity of the pattern.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern precisely Rough Sea in Pourville from the National Museum of Western Art, inventory P.1959-0149 and Wildenstein 1444.
The oil on canvas is dated 1897 and measures 73.5 × 101 cm. Monet signed and dated it "Claude Monet 97" in the lower left corner.
The museum notice indicates that Monet worked from a small fisherman's cabin. This lightly protected position allowed him to directly observe the rough seas and rapid changes in light.
The painting belonged to the collection formed by Kôjiro Matsukata. It is today kept in Tokyo and also bears the Matsukata M774 marker.
