À propos de l’œuvre

Les pommiers en fleurs, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A path between the orchards of Argenteuil · Private collection

Apple trees in bloom W201hand painted reproduction

A clear path leads between apple trees laden with white flowers. The large tree on the left spreads its branches above low crops, while poplars and foliage close the garden on the horizon. Painted in Argenteuil in the spring of 1872, this painting was shown four years later at the second impressionist exhibition under the title Le Printemps.

Look at the work

The path transforms the orchard into a luminous depth

Two clear traces start from the lower edge and converge towards the center. They separate the cultivated rows while leading between the trees. The apple tree on the left, higher and wider, forms an asymmetrical vault above this passage.

The flowers are placed in small white, cream and blue gray touches, without an isolated petal design. Their brightness increases on contact with new greens, pink earths and brown foliage in the background. The sky appears in fragments between the branches.

Monet does not count the flowers: he distributes their sparkles so that the entire orchard seems to vibrate in the cool spring light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A central axis that is never rigid

The path divides, fades under the grass and changes width. These irregularities avoid an overly insistent academic perspective and give the feeling of a garden traveled daily.

02

Whites are constructed by contrast

Flowers contain yellow, blue and gray. Placed against the dark trunks and green of young leaves, they appear brighter than a uniform white.

03

A carefully composed garden

Christie's raises the rows of vines under the trees on the left and the young trellised shoots on the right. Monet selects these agricultural elements while pushing aside trains and neighboring houses to create a rural scene.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Apple trees in bloom, oil on canvas from 1872, 59.5 × 73.5 cm, listed Wildenstein 201. The unique WebP measures 700 × 570 px, maximum definition of the exact public institutional file, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The large apple tree on the left remains dominant

Its dark trunk divides low and supports a very extensive crown. The other trees respond to this mass without reaching the same magnitude.

Color02

The flowers are read in groups

Small light touches concentrate around the branches and let the foliage breathe. Flowers painted one by one would make the whole thing too decorative and frozen.

Matter03

The path combines pink, beige, green and blue

Its traces are not white. The colors of shade, earth and grass cut its surface and integrate it into the orchard.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in Argenteuil in 1872, this oil on canvas measures 59.5 × 73.5 cm. It is listed as Wildenstein 201 and is now in a private collection.

Exposure01

Presented as Spring in 1876

Monet chose this painting for the second impressionist exhibition. Critics then recognized the garden path disappearing between the apple trees and the very direct sensation of the month of May.

Argenteuil02

One of the first orchards painted after its installation

The Monet family settled in Argenteuil at the end of 1871. The garden and its fruit trees offered a similar, bright pattern from the following spring that was conducive to outdoor work.

Course03

From Chicago to a special collection

The painting entered the Union League Club of Chicago in 1895 and remained linked to this collection for nearly one hundred and thirty years. It was sold at Christie's in New York in November 2024.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the irregular convergence of the two traces of the path.
  • Differentiate between warm and cold whites of flowers.
  • Maintain the large apple tree on the left as the dominant shape.
  • Show low crops without over-detailing them.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This spring orchard is suitable for a bright living room, bedroom or dining room. A light wood, patinated white or matte gold frame accompanies the flowers; a sage green, cream or powder pink wall extends the season.
