Look at the work

The sea fills the setting and reduces Antibes to the meeting of water and rock

The horizon is set high, leaving the marine surface to occupy most of the composition. Two rocky advances enter from the right and cut the waves into several oblique movements.

Deep blue, purple and white enliven the water; orange, pink and brown warm the rocks. The very clear sky takes on mauve nuances which connect the horizon to the sea.

No monuments or picturesque vegetation: Monet focuses this version of Antibes on the changing material of the Mediterranean and the contrast of warm rocks.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately high horizon

The faint strip of sky increases the physical presence of water. The viewer looks slightly down, as if from the coast.

02

Rocks that cut the current

The two orange masses create swirls and foam lines. They give direction to the otherwise very free blue touches.

03

Hot-cold contrast as a structure

Mediterranean rocks respond to the purple blues of the sea. This opposition is enough to organize the painting without architecture or figure.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1183 is used. The real WebP measures 1000 × 827 px and comes from the Von der Heydt Museum file, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve pinkish orange rocks

They should not become uniform browns or reds. The mixture of warm tones restores the light of the South.

Color02

Keep the waves in separate touches

Whites, blues and purples must remain fragmented. Smoothing them would lose the energy of the mistral and current.

Matter03

Keep the sky very simple

Its sobriety reinforces the density of the sea. Adding contrast or detailed clouds would change the balance of W1183.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Von der Heydt Museum documents The Sea in Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 65 × 82 cm, signed lower right, inventory G 1316 and Wildenstein 1183.

Campaign01

Monet's stay in Antibes in 1888

Faced with a Mediterranean light that he considers difficult to translate, Monet multiplies the motifs of capes, pines, mountains and the open sea.

Version02

The Wildenstein 1183 canvas

Its high horizon, its absence of monuments and its two orange rocky advances distinguish it from La Grande Bleue W1182.

Collection03

Acquired by the museum in 1975

The painting is kept in Wuppertal under number G 1316, within the impressionist collection of the Von der Heydt Museum.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This energetic navy is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A gray blue wall, pale terracotta or off-white and a dark frame accentuate its contrast.
