Look at the work

A family portrait where the face emerges from a deliberately free material

The head is constructed with more precision than the bust. Dark eyes, pink cheeks and small mouth hold the eye, while the sweater resolves into wide blue and purple passages.

The light background is not uniform: traces of green, blue and yellow surround the silhouette. The edges of the garment remain open, as if the child is gradually appearing through the canvas.

W847 combines the intimacy of a portrait of a son with the freedom of a study: Monet concentrates the resemblance in the face and lets the color finish off the rest.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The face as the optical center

The eyes are placed almost halfway up and contrast with the fair skin. The keys are smaller, without reaching the smooth finish of an academic portrait.

02

A sweater made of multiple blues

Midnight blue, cobalt, purple and gray make up the garment. The light reserves and dry touches make the material breathe.

03

Michel Monet at five years old

Born in 1878, the second son of Claude and Camille Monet was still a young child in 1883. The close format transformed the family session into immediate presence.

Read this specific version

The file uses a single image, that of work 5019. The file is a real WebP of 868 × 1024 px, preserved at its source resolution and without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A silhouette that remains open

The sleeves and lower bust should not be closed with a regular outline: interruptions are part of the picture expression.

Color02

Carnations mixed at the bottom

Pink, beige, mauve and gray intersect in the face. Evenly pink skin would cause fragile light to be lost.

Matter03

A canvas visible under the painting

Thin passages around the body and some dry touches reveal the weft, while the hair and eyes are denser.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet museum preserves Michel Monet in the blue sweater, oil on canvas from 1883, 46.5 × 38.5 cm, inventory 5019 and Wildenstein 847.

Model01

Michel Monet, second son of the painter

Michel was born in 1878 to Claude Monet and Camille Doncieux. He will become the main heir of the workshop and the works remaining in Giverny.

Legacy02

A painting sent by Michel Monet

When he died in 1966, Michel bequeathed to the Marmottan museum an exceptional collection of works by his father, at the origin of the museum's Monet collection.

Gender03

A rare isolated figure

Monet is best known for his landscapes. This tight portrait shows how his impressionist touch can capture a physiognomy without rigid drawing.
