À propos de l’œuvre
Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Around 1886 -1887 · Montmartre, Paris
The Moulin de la Galette, F348Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The large Blute-Fin mill occupies almost the entire height of the canvas. Its staircase rises diagonally towards a narrow platform; at the foot of the mound, an embracing couple, a black silhouette and a few walkers give the construction a spectacular presence.
Look at the work
The staircase transforms the mill into show architecture
The wooden cabin is seen from below. Its walls, pillars and wings become entangled in an unstable construction, while the very steep staircase leads the eye towards the upper gallery.
In the foreground, the light couple advances near the right edge. Higher up, tiny red and black figures occupy the walkways; they remind us that the Blute-Fin was part of the entertainment venue known as the Moulin de la Galette.
Le Moulin de la Galette F348/JH1182 is an oil on paper mounted on canvas measuring 61 × 50 cm, painted in Montmartre around 1886 -1887. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires preserves it under number 2720.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The mill is less a landscape element than a line machine. The staircase, wings, masts and barriers cut out the pale blue sky; the figures show the scale and activity of the site.
The low angle enlarges the wooden cabin
The gaze starts from the characters and goes up the stairs to the platform. The construction seems to tilt towards the viewer, an effect reinforced by the vertical format.
The sky serves as a reserve of light
The fairly uniform blue-gray leaves the finest uprights visible. The greens and browns of the mill thus appear denser and more solid.
The characters tell of several levels of attendance
The couple on the ground, the silhouette under the stairs and the little walkers up high distribute life along the entire slope without distracting attention from the mill.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F348/JH1182, inventory 2720 and the format of 61 × 50 cm make it possible to identify this version preserved in Buenos Aires among the numerous paintings at the Moulin de la Galette.
The Blute-Fin belonged to the Moulin de la Galette complex
The name designated a café-concert developed between two mills, the Blute-Fin and the Radet. Van Gogh is interested here in construction and its access.
The subject was near Theo's home
Van Gogh joined his brother in Paris in March 1886. Installed on rue Lepic, he painted the mills, quarries and gardens which still remained on the mound.
The Argentine Museum exhibits it in room 14
Entered through the Thannhauser Gallery and the Müller Gallery, the work is registered as the centerpiece of the museum under inventory 2720.
