Look at the work

The red facade and the light street make this version immediately recognizable

The cabaret forms a red-orange block in the center. Its roofline crosses the canvas, while the wings of the mill open two long diagonals above and the street lamp descends to the sidewalk.

The very light roadway occupies a large part of the foreground. Two dark curves lead the eye there: the edge of the sidewalk and a trace which goes up from the bottom towards the corner of the facade.

Le Moulin de la Galette F226/JH1172 is a 38 × 46 cm oil on canvas painted in Montmartre in the fall of 1886. It belongs to the collection of the Museum Langmatt in Baden, Switzerland.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Compared to F228, this version favors light and warm tones. The red of the building, the ocher of the houses and the white-yellow of the ground give the pattern a more sunny presence.

01

Red brings together signs and openings

The black panels, pale letters and doors are part of the same red facade. This contrast makes the activity of the place readable from a distance.

02

The foreground remains almost empty

The characters are pushed to the sides or foot of the building. The large light surface of the street gives air to the composition and accentuates the climb to the right.

03

The houses extend the mill

Their chimneys, roofs and ocher walls are superimposed behind the cabaret. They anchor the machine in an inhabited area rather than in an isolated landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F226/JH1172 and the 38 × 46 cm format identify the Museum Langmatt version, distinct from F228 kept in Berlin and F227 in Otterlo.

Langmatt

The painting belongs to the Baden collection

The Langmatt Museum preserves this clear variant of the Moulin de la Galette, recognizable by the red facade and the large cream foreground.

Variants

The same point of view produces several tables

Van Gogh moves the figures, modifies the design of the signs and changes the colored balance. These differences show research rather than simple repetition.

Neighborhood

Montmartre lies between leisure and urbanization

The mill and its cabaret attract passers-by, while the street, the street lamp and the houses make the development of the neighborhood visible.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the red facade, the cream sky, the large light ground, the black inscriptions, the street lamp, the groups of passers-by and the turquoise accents of the mill.

  • The large black wing which descends to the left
  • The red and turquoise flag at the top
  • The black signs on the red facade
  • The compact group placed near the wall on the left
  • The dark curve that crosses the light foreground
