À propos de l’œuvre
Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Montmartre, Paris
Le Moulin de la Galette, F228Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The mill rises above a dark facade bearing the words "Buffet", "Moulin de la Galette" and "Vins liqueurs". A street lamp, several passers-by and the rising street transform the Montmartre monument into an urban scene.
Look at the work
The mill, the sign and the street lamp make up a neighborhood silhouette
The wings cut the sky in black diagonals while the street lamp opposes them with a thin vertical. The facade of the cabaret develops horizontally below, then the street escapes towards the right edge.
Van Gogh divided the figures into small groups: four figures huddled to the left, a person stood in front of the facade and a man walked down the street. These presences give an immediate scale to the building.
Le Moulin de la Galette F228/JH1171 is an oil on canvas measuring 38 × 46.5 cm painted in Montmartre in the fall of 1886. The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin preserves it under inventory A II 687.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This Berlin version can be recognized by its dark tone, the group placed on the far left and the slightly offset street lamp of the mill. The painted inscriptions make the cabaret as much a commercial as an architectural subject.
The words belong to the composition
"Buffet", "Wines" and "liqueurs" are not incidental details. Their clear letters punctuate the dark facade and describe the place as a busy establishment.
The pale sky increases the contrast of the wings
The gray pink surface, covered with short keys, serves as a screen for the black mechanism. The red flag becomes the only bright accent in the upper part.
The street curves around the building
The edge of the sidewalk starts from the foreground then goes up to the right. This curve rotates the gaze around the corner of the cabaret.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F228/JH1171, the 38 × 46.5 cm format and the A II 687 inventory distinguish the Berlin version from the F226 and F227 versions, painted from a very close point of view.
Van Gogh uses the same motif in several variations
F226, F227 and F228 show the mill and the cabaret with differences in figures, color and framing. Catalog numbers avoid confusing them.
The place still mixes city and open ground
To the left of the cabaret, the view joins a less built-up area; on the right, the houses line the street. Van Gogh paints precisely this urban edge.
Version F228 belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie
Its A II 687 inventory and its dimensions of 38 × 46.5 cm allow it to be linked to the Berlin collection.
