Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Montmartre, Paris

Le Moulin de la Galette, F228Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The red facade of the Moulin de la Galette still bears its wine and refreshment bar signs. Behind it, the mill topped with the French flag dominates a street in Montmartre where several groups of passers-by advance under a pale pink sky.

Look at the work

The tavern and the mill meet in a real street scene

The mill stands behind the low building, whose red facade forms a long horizontal band. The wings, the floor lamp and the flag introduce three different verticals into the sky.

The figures are scattered: a small group near the wall on the left, a silhouette in front of the facade and a single man in the middle of the street. Their presence shows the place of consumption and leisure, not just the grinding machine.

The Moulin de la Galette F228/JH1171 is an oil on canvas measuring 38 × 46.2 cm painted in Paris in the fall of 1886. It is kept at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin under inventory A II 687.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This version is distinguished by the inscriptions on the facade and its urban life. Van Gogh juxtaposes an old mill, a popular refreshment bar, houses and a modern street lamp in a space that is both rural and Parisian.

01

The red facade carries the commercial story

The words "buvette", "wines" and "Moulin de la Galette" are integrated into the painting. The letters are not perfectly regular, but make the building immediately identifiable.

02

The mill appears behind the roof

The cabin is only partially visible, yet the wings and flag extend it very high. It appears inserted in the neighborhood rather than isolated on a hill.

03

Passers-by distribute depth

The group on the left is close, the dark figure in front of the facade occupies the middle and the man on the street retreats towards the houses. These silhouettes construct the space without rigid perspective.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F228/JH1171 and inventory A II 687 distinguish the Berlin version of F227 in Otterlo and F226 in Baden, three similar compositions painted in the fall of 1886.

Location

The name brought together Blute-Fin and Radet

The Debray family had transformed the mills into a place of consumption and dance. The signs visible in the canvas recall this popular activity.

Version

F228 further develops the facade and the street

Van Gogh uses a similar motif in F227, but the Berlin version seems more controlled and multiplies the inscriptions, buildings and characters.

Collection

The Nationalgalerie acquired the painting in 1929

The work entered the Berlin collections through the Alfred Gold gallery. Its number A II 687 remains the current inventory benchmark.
