À propos de l’œuvre

Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Montmartre, Paris

Le Moulin de la Galette, F349Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

On the Montmartre hill, a small wooden mill stands out in a sky crossed by clouds and birds. A bent worker in the foreground, a few figures near the construction and the stony slope give this clear view a very human scale.

Look at the work

A tiny mill dominates the entire slope of Montmartre

The mill is placed very high in the vertical format. Its mast and wings cross the sky, while its blue-gray cabin appears almost fragile above the embankment.

The slope occupies more than half of the canvas. Horizontal touches of ocher, blue, green and white describe the stones; the silhouette leaning at the bottom of the composition transforms this land into a work space.

Le Moulin de la Galette F349/JH1184 is a 55 × 38.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in the fall of 1886. This vertical version belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh here lightens the dark palette of his Dutch years. The blues and whites of the sky extend into the mill and the slope, while small red and green accents prevent the whole thing from becoming monochrome.

01

The vertical of the mast holds the composition

The mast crosses the cabin and rises almost to the upper edge. The horizontal and oblique wings respond to it like the lines of a large irregular cross.

02

The slope is built by a mosaic of keys

Turquoise blue, orange, pale yellow and green are juxtaposed in short lines. Their direction follows the relief rather than a carefully drawn perspective.

03

The curved figure brings the subject closer to everyday life

The character in the foreground is not just a walker. His working posture contrasts with the festive image generally associated with the Moulin de la Galette.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The number F349, the reference JH1184, the format of 55 × 38.5 cm and the silhouette of the worker distinguish this canvas from the numerous views of the Moulin de la Galette painted by Van Gogh in 1886.

Series

Van Gogh took over the mills of Montmartre several times

Living with his brother Theo on rue Lepic, he found mills, gardens and still semi-rural land around him, on the edge of modern Paris.

Version

F349 shows the slope and an isolated worker

Unlike F348, kept in Buenos Aires, this version does not develop either a large staircase or a couple of walkers: the mill seems more distant and lighter.

Palette

The Parisian stay releases lighter colors

The canvas combines cobalt blue, white, turquoise and orange. This mixture announces the chromatic intensification that the artist will then continue in the South.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the transparency of the sky, the blue-gray silhouette of the mill, the very thin mast, the birds, the small figures and the colorful mosaic of the slope.

  • The bluish-white cloud that opens the top of the canvas
  • The little red flag attached to the mill wing
  • The birds scattered around the mast
  • The bent worker in the foreground
  • The turquoise, orange and cream lines which describe the embankment
