À propos de l’œuvre
Le Moulin de la Galette, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Paris
Le Moulin de la Galette, F228Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
At the top of Montmartre, the old mill dominates an establishment with red facades, a few walkers and a pale street; Van Gogh still observes Paris with a dark touch, but already freer.
Look at the work
Montmartre between village and place of pleasure
The black wings of the mill stand out against a white sky and occupy the upper center of the canvas. Below, the sign and the red walls of the tavern form a compact strip.
The street opens fan-shaped in the foreground, populated by small groups and a street lamp. Roofs and chimneys close the horizon, reminding us that this rural vestige is now in the heart of an urbanized neighborhood.
Van Gogh lived in Paris with his brother Theo from 1886 to 1888. He painted the Moulin de la Galette several times, a former mill that became a tavern, attracted by the meeting between the traces of old Montmartre and the modern city.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This version belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie under inventory A II 687. The references F228/JH1171 and the format of 38 × 46.2 cm distinguish it from the other mills painted by Van Gogh in Montmartre.
A composition dominated by wings
The two diagonals of the mill cross the sky and stabilize the scene. They respond to the softer obliques of the street and roofs.
Red versus white
The red-brown facade, dark shutters and signs stand out strongly against the very light sky and the beige gray floor.
Characters as a measure
The tiny silhouettes locate the scale of the building and instead give daily movement without looking away from the mill.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Berlin collections record this painting under A II 687; she entered the Nationalgalerie in 1929 with a purchase from the Alfred Gold gallery in Berlin.
The Moulin de la Galette
The site on rue Lepic brought together two old mills and a tavern where Parisians came to dance and drink Montmartre wine.
Several views, the same pattern
Van Gogh changes the point of view, the season and the framing from one canvas to another; numbers F228/JH1171 avoid confusing this version.
A II 687 in Berlin
The work is preserved by the Alte Nationalgalerie des Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, on Museum Island.

- The red facade of the tavern
- The isolated street lamp in the foreground
- Groups of walkers
