Moulin à eau d'Opwetten, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 · Opwetten, near Nuenen

Opwetten Watermill, F48Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

The Opwetten mill forms a dark mass under a yellow gray sky. The wheel is caught between two buildings, whose oblique roofs descend to the right, while a thin white current runs through the bottom of the composition.

Look at the work

A dark architecture whose wheel becomes the central articulation

The main building stands on stilts, almost frontally. On the right, the wheel and its mechanism are inserted under a long, low roof, connected to a brick construction.

The sky is painted in large gray-green and cream bands. A few yellow openings in the facades are enough to reveal the volumes without breaking the atmosphere at the end of the day.

Opwetten F48/JH527 water mill is an oil on canvas mounted on a 45 × 58 cm panel, painted near Nuenen in November 1884. The work belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is based on three roof obliques and the fragmented circle of the wheel, all contained in a palette of grays, browns and greens.

01

The main building blocks the center

Its almost black facade and compact roof form a large rectangle, animated only by two small ocher windows.

02

The wheel connects the two constructions

Its blades and rays appear between the central mass and the right roof, like a mechanism caught in architecture.

03

Water is only indicated by a few accents

Vertical piloting, dark bank and white stripe on the right are enough to locate the mill above the current.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F48/JH527, the format of 45 × 58 cm and the date of November 1884 identify this view of Opwetten in a private collection.

Site

A mill on the Kleine Dommel

The Opwetten mill is located near Nuenen and Eindhoven; Van Gogh regularly traveled this countryside to paint the buildings of Brabant.

Series

A distinct motif from the Gennep mills

The wheel here is embedded between two dark buildings, unlike Gennep's large double mill painted in a panoramic format.

Support

A canvas mounted on a panel

The documented support combines the texture of the canvas with the rigidity of the panel, in a horizontal format of 45 × 58 cm.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the black facade, the two windows, the central wheel, the long roof on the right, the stilts and the clear bands of sky and water.

  • The dark gable placed on the left
  • The two small yellow windows
  • The visible blades of the wheel
  • The long roof tilted to the right
  • The thin white water at the bottom edge
