Artwork description
Claude Monet · The port of Zaandam in 1871 · Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek
A large dark mill stands on the left above a bank covered with reeds and hulls. On the right, sailing boats and boats slide on clear water under a vast gray sky. Monet contrasts the motionless mass of the mill with the movement of boats, birds and reflections.

Look at the work
The mill occupies the left third and rises to the middle of the sky. Its wings are stopped in an irregular position; around its base, roofs, stakes, reeds and boats form a dense band of greens and browns. This compact mass contrasts with the almost empty opening of the sky.
On the right, several black and brown sails punctuate the horizon. A boat driven by rowers advances in the foreground, while other smaller hulls are lost towards the distance. Black birds scattered across the sky repeat the direction of the sails and give light animation to the space.
The silhouette of the mill is a visual anchor; all around, water, sails and birds set the landscape in motion again.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The mill is not placed in the middle. Its lateral position lets the sky and river extend widely to the right.
Masts, sails, stakes and figures are indicated by vertical or oblique touches. Their repetition is enough to suggest intense activity.
Boats and banks extend into the water in fragmented greens, blacks and ochres. The shapes come undone as soon as they touch the surface.
Reference image
The unique reference documents the MIN 3233 canvas exhibited at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The original photographic file of 4,389 × 2,822 px was reduced to 3,000 × 1,929 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.
Warm grays and very light clouds give air around the mill. Birds prevent this large area from remaining inert.
Mill and sails are never uniform black. Browns, deep greens and blue-gray retain shades in dark areas.
The reeds and the nearby boat are painted with visible gestures. Further on, the boats are reduced to a few vertical accents.
Documented benchmarks
This oil on canvas from 1871 is kept at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek under inventory MIN 3233 and corresponds to number 177 of the Wildenstein catalog.
After London, Monet stayed with his family in Zaandam from May to October 1871. The banks of the Zaan inspired around twenty-five paintings.
Mills, shipyards, sailboats and boats then characterize the city. Monet does not isolate them: he brings them together in an atmosphere of sky and water.
The work belongs to the collections of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, where its dimensions of 48 × 73.5 cm and its number MIN 3233 allow this version to be precisely identified.
