À propos de l’œuvre

Moulin à vent de Montmartre, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Autumn 1886 · Montmartre, Paris

Montmartre windmill, F271Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A stepped path climbs between two fences to the mill facing the sky. A solitary walker advances towards the summit; the small French flag and the wings of the mill animate the silhouette of the mound.

Look at the work

The staircase leads the gaze from the foreground to the mill and the sky

The passage rises almost to the center of the canvas, then bends slightly to the left. Its clear steps are framed by a green fence and a pink wall, two converging lines which make the slope immediately noticeable.

The mill is not isolated: low construction, leafless trees and barriers occupy the entire right. The walker placed on the path measures the height of the ascent and gives the landscape daily life.

Montmartre Windmill F271/JH1186 is a 46.5 × 38 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in the fall of 1886. The original was destroyed by fire in 1967.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This vertical composition is distinguished from the horizontal views of the Moulin de la Galette. Van Gogh favors steep access, the network of fences and the opposition between pink earth and a very open blue sky.

01

Two diagonals enclose the path

The left fence and the right wall approach at the top. This simple perspective transforms the staircase into the main axis of the composition.

02

The mill is divided into rapid signs

The cabin, wings, masts and flag are indicated by nervous brown lines. Their finesse contrasts with the widely brushed steps.

03

Bare trees complicate the silhouette

The branches on the right cross the wings and the sky. They prevent the mill from becoming an isolated emblem and place it in still semi-rural terrain.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F271/JH1186, the vertical format of 46.5 × 38 cm and the central staircase distinguish this painting from the other Montmartre mills made by Van Gogh in 1886.

Location

The mills still survived on the mound

When Van Gogh arrived, Montmartre preserved gardens, quarries, palisades and mills in the vicinity of already urbanized neighborhoods.

Loss

The original disappeared in a fire in 1967

The composition is only known from previous reproductions. Any current copy must therefore carefully respect these documentary traces.

Series

Van Gogh varies points of view rather than repeating a pattern

Some paintings show the facade of the tavern or the mills seen from afar; F271 highlights the route that leads to the summit.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the vertical format, the central staircase, the walker, the mill and its flag, the palisades, the pink wall, the bare trees and the big blue sky.

  • The path going up between the two fences
  • The little white figure in the middle of the steps
  • The French flag above the mill
  • The thin wings that cross the sky
  • The black tree and low construction in the foreground right
