Look at the work

A working line at ground height

On the left, two figures lean towards the tubers; in the center, a kneeling person collects the harvest while another stands up. A fifth silhouette continues the work on the right.

The faces remain poorly individualized. Dark clothing, brown ground and light bags or baskets above all build a collective rhythm under a band of pale sky.

Potato harvest (five figures) F9/JH385 is a 39.5 × 94.5 cm oil on canvas painted in The Hague in August 1883. This panoramic composition belongs to a private collection in Hamburg.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The very elongated relationship of the canvas forces the gaze to successively travel through each worker. Van Gogh places no hero at the center: the real subject is the repetition of gestures.

01

The five bodies punctuate the width

Each silhouette adopts a different position, from a strongly curved back to an almost vertical station. This variety avoids any monotony in the frieze.

02

The horizon remains very high

Most of the canvas belongs to the field and figures. The clear sky forms only a narrow band that loosens heads and shoulders.

03

Tones connect men to the earth

Brown, black, faded blue and ocher circulate clothes on the ground. The characters seem literally inscribed in the material of the field.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The English title of the catalog is Potato Digging (Five Figures). The correct translation therefore refers to five human figures, not "five digits". The references of the work are F9 and JH385.

Title

Five figures, not five figures

The number designates the five workers visible in the field. The French wording has been corrected to restore the meaning of the documentary title.

Format

A canvas 94.5 cm wide

The panoramic ratio is unusual in early Van Gogh oils. It allows him to deploy the stages of work across the entire width.

Context

A study of peasant labor

In The Hague, Van Gogh regularly drew and painted workers of the dunes and fields. He looks for simple poses that convey the weight and repetition of the work.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the five distinct silhouettes, their curved positions, the long brown field, the blue-black accents of the clothing and the narrow light strip of the sky.

  • The five figures divided into friezes
  • The variety of work gestures
  • Light potatoes on the ground
  • The very elongated panoramic format
  • The band of pale sky
