Les Meules, Giverny, morning effect W1214hand painted reproduction

Two millstones emerge from a field drowned in mauve, pink and blue, under a morning light which almost dissolves the horizon. Painted in Giverny in 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 92 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1214.

Look at the work

Morning transforms two familiar volumes into masses of color

The large left millstone is truncated by the lower edge and dominates the composition. The second, smaller, stands back to the right; behind them, the field and the sky meet in a clear atmosphere.

Purple, lilac, pink and blue run through the ground and shadows. The peaks receive warmer touches of ocher and red, while the sky mixes white, mauve and pale yellow.

The pattern remains solid, but its contours vibrate: the morning light seems to directly attack the shape of the millstones.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two volumes at different distances

The difference in scale between the millstones creates depth without path or architecture. The large gerbier acts as a threshold in front of the misty space.

02

A cold palette warmed by the peaks

Purple shadows dominate, but a few reds and ochres indicate surfaces already affected by light.

03

A transition to the series of 1890 -1891

W1214 shortly precedes the twenty-five systematic millstones. Monet already explores the repetition of the motif and the transformation of its colors by time.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1214 is used. The real WebP measures 1,280 × 914 px and maintains the best reliable public definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the left grinding wheel cut by the frame

Its scale depends on this close framing. Reducing it or adding field in front of it would weaken its monumental role.

Color02

Keep purples bright

Shadows should not turn gray or black. The mixture of lilac, blue and pink produces the morning effect.

Matter03

Keep the second wheel slightly warped

It must remain less contrasted than the first. This atmospheric difference is essential to depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Les Meules, Giverny, morning effect is an oil on canvas from 1889, 65 × 92 cm, kept in a private collection and listed Wildenstein 1214.

Version01

The Wildenstein 1214 canvas

It can be recognized by its two millstones, predominantly purple-pink and the large left gerbier which enters directly from the lower edge.

Pattern02

Wheat shepherds, not simple piles of hay

The shapes are stacks built to protect the harvest. Their stable geometry provides Monet with ideal support for observing light.

Timeline03

Painted before the series exhibited in 1891

The large suite numbered W1266 to W1290 begins after the harvest of 1890. W1214 shows that research was already underway in Giverny.

  • The large purple millstone in the foreground
  • The second millstone in the mist
  • The pink and blue light of the morning
