The pond occupies almost the entire lower half of the canvas and reflects vegetation so dense that it seems to extend the bank. At the bottom, a gap of light breaks through between the trees. Monet transforms a corner of Montgeron Park into an enveloping space, constructed by dark values, reflections and distant clarity.

Undergrowth opens onto a reflective sheet of water

Two sloping trees close the right, while a darker mass of foliage descends from the left edge. Between these two screens, the gaze reaches the illuminated bank at the bottom. The horizon remains low and almost dissolved: the depth depends more on the light than on the drawing.

The foreground is an unstable mirror. White, green, brown, blue and some red accents overlap in horizontal touches. The trunks extend downward with vertical reflections, but their contours break upon contact with water lines.

The painting contrasts a very dark edge with a pale opening; the pond collects this light and brings it back to the viewer.

The clear passage, placed slightly to the left of the center, catches the eye behind the bank. Its irregular shape prevents the space from becoming a geometric perspective.

The trunks descend vertically into the water, while the surface brushstrokes remain mostly horizontal. Their crossing gives the body of water its vibration.

A deliberately profound foreground

The nearest part is also the darkest. Almost black greens and browns increase the brightness of the central area without the need for a visible sky.

A few warm touches appear on the surface and near the bank. Their rarity avoids dispersing the gaze.
