Claude Monet · Walkers in a field in Argenteuil · Pola Museum of Art

The Walk in Argenteuil W379hand painted reproduction

A woman dressed in gray advances in the foreground among the purple and yellow grass. Behind her, a second figure carries a light parasol and a child stands near a large tree. Monet distributes these presences in an open field under a vast blue sky, so that the walk seems less to tell an action than to measure the light and the extent of the landscape.

Look at the work

Three figures and a tree punctuate the clear immensity of the fields

The woman in the foreground is placed to the right of the center. Her mauve gray dress partially blends into flowers and herbs, while her hat and shoes provide dark accents. Its scale gives immediate proximity to the landscape.

Further on, the translucent umbrella forms a pale disk in front of the horizon. A large vertical tree balances the group and separates the houses on the left from the open fields on the right. The sky occupies almost half of the canvas and bears blues, water greens and pink clouds.

Walkers are not posed in front of the landscape: their clothes, their shadows and their distances contribute to its light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A depth constructed by three scales

The nearby woman, the figure with the parasol and the small character near the tree follow one another in space. Their gradual reduction guides the gaze without a drawn path or architectural perspective.

02

The tree as a vertical hinge

Its green mass rises above the horizon and connects the field to the sky. Slightly off-center, it balances the figure on the right while separating the more built-up and more open areas.

03

A touch that combines flowers, herbs and clothing

The purples, yellows and greens in the foreground pass over the dress without a continuous outline. This porosity between figure and vegetation gives the sensation of a luminous moment rather than a scene composed in the workshop.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image is provided by the Pola Museum of Art for work 016-0055, identified as Wildenstein 379. Its native definition of 1500 × 1103 px has been preserved and then encoded in WebP, without enlargement.

Composition01

The figure in the foreground must remain light

The grays of her dress receive pink, blue and green. A dark, closed outline would detach her excessively from the field in which Monet integrates her.

Color02

The Umbrella captures the light of the sky

Its whites are tinged with yellow, green and blue. It remains transparent and should not become an opaque circular shape in the middle of the landscape.

Matter03

The flowers are suggested by scattered touches

Violets, yellows and pinks concentrate in the foreground then diminish towards the horizon. Their irregularity avoids any repetitive decorative motif.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 59.4 × 80.4 cm is kept at the Pola Museum of Art under inventory 016-0055. It corresponds to Wildenstein number 379.

Argenteuil01

A walk in the fields in 1875

The catalog raisonné places the work in the group of landscapes with painted figures in Argenteuil. Monet here combines the modern life of walkers with the still rural terrain surrounding the town.

Format02

A horizontal landscape of 59.4 × 80.4 cm

The Pola Museum of Art notice publishes the exact date, technique and dimensions. The big sky, the low horizon line and the laterally distributed figures take full advantage of this format.

Collection03

Inventory 016-0055 of the Pola Museum of Art

The Hakone institution presents La Promenade in its collection dedicated to Claude Monet. The reference 016-0055 distinguishes this composition from the famous Woman with an Umbrella from Washington and other walks from Argenteuil.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the three figures at their respective scales.
  • Keep the umbrella clear and translucent.
  • Differentiate the large tree from the bottom poplars.
  • Circulate purples, yellows and greens between the field and the dress.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The fresh palette and the big sky bring a luminous opening to a living room, bedroom or dining room. A blond oak, sage green or matte gold frame accompanies the fields without reducing the lightness of the figures and clouds.
