Look at the work

The railway crosses a changing landscape

The locomotive moves from right to left in an almost horizontal lane. Its dark body remains partially drowned in the environment, but the white steam unfolds diagonally and becomes the real visual engine of the canvas. In the foreground, a woman with an umbrella and a man, tiny facing the industrial site, introduce a human scale.

Behind the train, a succession of buildings and tall chimneys fill the valley. Some release gray smoke which merges with the clouds, while the large plume of the locomotive retains a warmer light. The hill closes the horizon and contrasts its brown mass with the narrow green of the foreground.

Monet does not separate industry from the atmosphere: steam, smoke and clouds belong to the same pictorial movement.
