Look at the work

Mill only appears after passing through the shade of foliage

The left half is occupied by a large tree whose branches fall towards the water. On the right, the river gradually lights up and leads towards the bridge, the facade of the mill and a small, almost hidden area of sky.

Deep greens, blues and browns dominate the shadow, but many pinks, yellows and whites circulate in the leaves and reflections. The light does not come from a visible sky: it seems to rise from the surface of the water.

Monet transforms access to the mill into a visual passage: the eye leaves dense vegetation, follows the river and finally reaches the sun-drenched architecture.

The height allows the foliage to weigh above the river. The architecture, small and distant, becomes the end point rather than the immediate center.

The luminous reflection starts from the lower right and goes up towards the bridge. It opens a path in the middle of dark masses and organizes depth without visible linear perspective.

The Limetz arm mill

The motif is located near Giverny, on an arm of the Epte. Monet worked there in 1888, before his own water garden became the main laboratory for his reflections.
