Two close circles but never identical
The left pancake appears wider and lighter; the one on the right is redder and partially covered. This asymmetry avoids the decorative effect of perfect repetition.

Comprendre les formats
Claude Monet · Pourville · 1882 · W746
Two large puff patties rest on their wicker racks, near a bottle and a knife placed on a light tablecloth. Painted in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 746.

Look at the work
The two pancakes occupy the center of the table, one slightly taller and darker than the other. Their round shapes respond to braided racks, while the bottle at the top left and the knife at the bottom right stabilize the diagonal of the composition.
The dough is constructed by touches of yellow, cream, brown and pink. The tablecloth mixes white, blue and gray rather than a uniform tone; its folds and shadows give air around objects.
Monet treats the laminated surface as he treats a cliff or a sea: with colorful touches that capture light as much as material.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The left pancake appears wider and lighter; the one on the right is redder and partially covered. This asymmetry avoids the decorative effect of perfect repetition.
The brown lines of the racks protrude below the edges and create an intermediate texture between the irregular dough and the soft folds of the tablecloth.
Monet stayed in 1882 at Paul Graff's hotel-restaurant, known as À la Renommée des Galettes. These specialties served on wicker racks became the subject of this still life.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W746 is used. The real WebP measures 1020 × 812 px, the best reliable public definition identified for this version, preserved without artificial enlargement.
Color, diameter and impasto vary. Making them identical would remove the movement and very concrete perception of the meal.
Their brown braiding gives scale and explains the presentation of the pancakes. It must remain readable without becoming too regular a pattern.
These cold passages bring out the yellows and ochres. A pure white background would flatten the table and weaken the heat of the pastries.
Documented benchmarks
The catalog raisonné identifies Les Galettes as Wildenstein 746: an oil on canvas from 1882, 65 × 81 cm, today kept in a private collection.
Paul Antoine Graff, cook and hotelier, welcomes Monet during his Normandy campaign. His butter pancakes are served on the racks shown in the painting.
In 1882, Monet mainly painted beaches, cliffs and paths around Pourville. The subject of the table directly links hotel life to this period of work on the coast.
The Commons sheet documents in particular its presentation in Philadelphia in 2015 and at the Marmottan Monet museum in 2018 -2019, while indicating its status as a private collection.
