Claude Monet · Déville-lès-Rouen · Pola Museum of Art
A locomotive crosses the industrial landscape of Déville-lès-Rouen, projecting a long white plume. Factories, chimneys and hills intertwine under a heavy sky: Monet captures the modernization of the territory as a phenomenon as mobile as light.

Look at the work
The locomotive moves from right to left in an almost horizontal lane. Its dark body remains partially drowned in the environment, but the white steam unfolds diagonally and becomes the real visual engine of the canvas. In the foreground, a woman with an umbrella and a man, tiny facing the industrial site, introduce a human scale.
Behind the train, a succession of buildings and tall chimneys fill the valley. Some release gray smoke which merges with the clouds, while the large plume of the locomotive retains a warmer light. The hill closes the horizon and contrasts its brown mass with the narrow green of the foreground.
Monet does not separate industry from the atmosphere: steam, smoke and clouds belong to the same pictorial movement.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The steam follows a rising diagonal that leads the eye through the valley. Its ivory heart, gray edges and transparencies must maintain volume without forming a uniform white mass.
Railway tracks, factories, chimneys and hillsides pile up into tight strips. Dark verticals punctuate this depth and prevent the landscape from being reduced to a simple frieze.
The figures in the foreground are small but decisive: their presence measures the size of the train and factories, while bringing a touch of urban life to the scene.
Reference image
The reference retains the complete framing of the W213 canvas and makes it possible to distinguish the figures in the foreground, the locomotive, the Déville chimneys and the variations in density in the smoke.
The locomotive crosses the lower strip, leaving the industrial landscape and the sky with an unusual scale.
Ocher, earth, dark green and blue gray dominate, while ivory vapor concentrates light.
The plume of the train is thick and bright; the grayer factory fumes gradually dissolve in the air.
Documented benchmarks
The Pola Museum of Art notice precisely identifies the site, technique and role of the railway in this rare industrial composition by Monet.
The museum places the scene in this Norman town developed around metallurgy and textile manufacturing in the 19th century.
Painted before the first impressionist exhibition, the work announces the interest that Monet would subsequently have in the tracks and vapors of Saint-Lazare station.
This oil on canvas from 1872 measures 48.1 × 75 cm and corresponds to number 213 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Presentation in your interior
Its dark earths, bluish grays and luminous plume give this work a strong presence in a contemporary office, library or living room. A patinated black, burnished steel or walnut frame underlines its industrial character.
